One Student Review of De La Salle University: Manila
Please scroll up to leave a review.
I recently graduated from De La Salle University – Manila with a degree in Computer Engineering. The university is undoubtedly one of the best schools in the country, although as with any university, it has its pros and cons
For simplicity’s sake, I’m just going to follow the criteria given by the website and give my personal insight for each.
1. Stimulating courses
I honestly believe that stimulating courses means how interesting one finds the subjects to be. The university actually lacks flexibility in terms of allowing its students to take up minors in different fields. This practice common in the United States is what constantly makes college life interesting. The university generally sticks to a curriculum with no opportunity to pursue interests in other fields of study.
Even if you love your course (ex. Accounting), at some point ion your life you want to try that web design course, or a foreign language course to make things interesting, unfortunately this isn’t possible in the university.
2. Quality of Professors
If I’d give a breakdown, I would say that 30% of the professors are really good, 40% fall in the average while another 30% fall in the bad category. No doubt I have had professors whom I consider to be one of the most inspiring people ever, but the surge of fresh graduate professors who can barely teach is a let down. Then again the school undoubtedly has some of the best professors in the country.
3. Job opportunities.
DLSU is part of a renowned Big 4, similar to the Ivy League of the US. You can be assured that your diploma bearing the name of DLSU is an advantage when you’re looking for work.
4. Area around campus
The is probably the biggest turndown of the university. It is situated in a highly dense part of the city. While the train, buses, taxis and jeepneys all provide unparalleled accesibility, the busyness of the area is sometimes very stressful and isn’t really conducive to learning. The campus is a small concrete jungle as well. The 8 hectare compound is definitely insufficient to provide for a conducive environment.
I would however like to commend the fact that the school is in the heart of the city. Whether you’re going to Makati, QC, Manila or Fort is very easy.
5. Affordability
The school has a very expensive tuition fee, one of the most expensive in the country. Tuition alone will cost you around 180,000 pesos per year. It might not seem much compared to foreign university, but it’s a lot of money for us.
6. Housing
Due to the small campus, in-campus housing is not available. However there are plenty of condominiums for rent outside the campus. Affordable dormitories similar to the ones found in U-Belt are kinda scarce.
Due to the accessibility of the campus, one can generally rent a dorm anywhere in Manila whether it be in UN, pedrogil or even Chinatown. It’ll take you no more than 15 minutes to get to the school.
7. Extracurricular ops
DLSU does not allow fraternities to exist, so the greek system is out of the question. Student organizations mainly fall in three categories, academic, athletic and special interests.
I find it disappointing that organizations in the special organization category lacks diversity. Most clubs in the category are orgs devoted to debating, charity work, dance etc. In essence there’s not much “purely fun” organizations, at least for me.
8. Ratio
Normal. Some classes are 1:40, some are 1:25
9. Administration/staff
The staff are undoubtedly very professional and courteous. You will not experience menopausal cashiers giving smirks to students. Procedures are also highly efficient and automated.
10. Overall
If you have the money, DLSU is definitely worth the investment. If you value the prestige the job opportunities you get after graduating, even with the small campus, I highly recommend DLSU.
