5 Student Reviews of Empire State College : Online

  • The school’s focus on minority/social issues is well and good, except that the way they approach it has allowed for the college administration to operate with racist policies at the institutional level. White people are considered last for student leadership roles, and often have to fight tooth and nail to be considered to speak at graduation ceremonies because the school admins believe that “white people don’t represent diversity” and minority groups are a huge part of their business plan. In my experience the attitude of much of the administration is that because I’m white, I’m expected to do well and so academics aren’t as impressive as they would be were I Black or Hispanic. The color of your skin is what makes you succeed here, not your grades or ability to critically think through projects and assignments.

  • I am a Masters student at Empire and I am going to call BS on the hyped up experiential knowledge concept regarding their own hiring process.

I have one of their own professors as a reference who has been advocating PLA for the school and the valuation of experiential knowledge. Not only do I have both formal and experiential knowledge, but I am a current graduate student with a 4.0.

I was never called back for an interview I went on at Queensbury SUNY and never contacted as a consideration for the Empire location, except to be told I am not being considered for the position.

Don’t waste your time. This is a bunch of KOOL AID and HR should be embarrassed.

  • My experience in this school has been one of many frustrations. The professors do not respond to e-mail or offer effective feedback to help you do well. You’re on your own. The mentor program is a joke. They pass themselves off as being more helpful than a traditional advisor when in actuality they posess no credible certifications and do not have the knowledge to help you succeed.

Also, There is no program outline. You are responsible for creating your own degree program with little to no help. The worst part is there is only a 50% chance that your degree program will even pass the board.

The campus is nothing more than a glorified strip mall with no designated offices. People within the Empire State offices seem to have no area of expertise. In fact, they answer all questions you might have in generalities, shielding the school from taking any responsibility for leading you in the wrong direction because of their lack of knowledge. Mentors will carelessly tell you that it is okay to take all sorts of electives so that you will have to stay in school longer to finish all the necessary courses. They will do anything it takes to make you have to stay for extra semesters (costing you more money). If you are in this college the only way you will be successful is if you are your own advocate. They have no quams about telling you to take an incomplete so you are forced to stay another semester. They also have no idea how financial aid works with regard to grades, class selection, scholarships and number of credits needed. Forget about ever getting a straight answer from all faculty. Like the other two students, I’m too deep to get out now. Hopefully, it’s not too late for you.

  • Watch out for this place. First of all, they don’t believe in teaching. You have to teach yourself. Further, they don’t seem to be able to balance courseload, so be really careful about taking more than one class at once. Also, they think nothing of not responding all semester with that silly little thing called grades, and they feel free to change assignments half way through the semester when conscientious girl scouters like me have already completed them.

Also, they force you to attend expensive residencies at $300.00 per pop (3 of them) for no other reason than to bring money into Saratoga Springs.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I am disabled. Don’t worry, if you’re not familiar with this, than I can assure you, neither are they. Simply asking for a plug for my oxygen machine at the residency was more than they could handle. If you are handicapped and or going through an illness, with the silly thought that you can take this time to prepare for the rest of your life in the comfort of your own home, think again. Also, forget working and acquiring your MBA unless you only require 2 hours of sleep per night. The assignments aren’t appropriately rigorous. They are appropriately tedious, long winded and poorly communicated. I will graduate in the top of my class, but due exclusively to my efforts, not the assistance of the “kindly and courteous staff” who often don’t reply to e-mails for weeks, and often have less knowledge than I do of the subject matter (20 years in manufacturing). It’s pretty bad when you are taking a class from someone who is telling you how to cost something when they have never costed, or even worked in the industry. Them that can do. Them that can’t teach.

  • Beware! This is the equivalent of a cereal box online degree. Their program is horrible, their staff clueless, the quality of the program questionable, and I can’t even figure out how they got accredited. Too deep in to get out now. Straight A student with more knowledge than many of my professors (most of whom don’t speak English or respond to e-mails and have never read the course text). Most rely on the textbook websites to teach the class. Pathetic. Very little flexibility compared to what is promised. Further, this MBA does not prepare you for the CPA (by any stretch). Textbook costs are excessive and largely geared towards the founder’s own textbook (which you won’t be able to re-sell). Excessive residency costs ($300.00 before food and lodging). Lack of availability of classes, and low enrollment (which means courses get dumped so you have to wait until another semester to take them). In short, don’t put Empire on your resume, put SUNY. Hopefully, no one will ask for details.
