As a high school student in Costa Rica, I wanted to begin my college studies as quickly as I possibly could. Options were somewhat limited for aspiring applicants to college courses who had yet to graduate from high school and I was discouraged by this for a while until I found out about Fundatec. Fundatec is a branch of the Tecnologico’s installations that focuses on two year careers pertaining to electronic sciences and studies. Luckily for me, many of the different available careers accepted high school students who were at least in eleventh grade (the final grade in most Costa Rican schools); however, it is of note that all courses are taught in Spanish.
Most of the available courses were specific parts of other longer careers at the college and I could choose from a list of different options such as a career in “Cisco” operation or one pertaining to nano-science. I personally chose to study to become a support technician and I am now close to finishing the course. Each career is made up of a list of different classes that each last seven weeks (one day a week). Depending on your own preferences, you can choose to take only one each week (as I did) or two per week as the classes are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You are required to pay a fee of $130 for each class plus the initial sign-up fee for your chosen career. Payment is fairly simple and pain-free for the most part and after each payment, you need to sign up at the “Electronic School” located on the college campus. On the first day of each class, you will receive a book to use as reference for studies and this is included already with no additional cost.
The teachers whom I’ve learned from have all been quite adept at their own craft and enthusiastic about teaching classes. At the end of each class, every student is presented with a sheet requiring that they rate the services which they’ have received. I particularly appreciate this option as it allows students to express some form of feedback (be it positive or negative) without forcing us to go to too much trouble.
Classes in the Fundatec have (in my own experience) relatively late schedules and take place from six to nine on most nights. I often buy myself something to eat during the scheduled breaks in between halves of the classes at the little restaurant (one of various) located conveniently on campus.
In the past I have been a part of other activities which regularly took place on the Tecnologico’s campus pertaining to athletics. The college has its own track and field for sports to be carried out which is open to the public during the day and for a portion of the night.
The Tecnologico also has various stores and a library on campus which I have made use of from time to time. The stores sell various items that are useful to students as well as books required by certain careers.
All in all, my experience with the Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica has been a good one.
