One Student Review of Nnamdi Azikiwe University : Awka

  • I graduated from this Institution in 2008 with a degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. During the period of my admission, I learned to be a mentally stronger person. Our admission days required us running blood tests and Xray, this process was rigorous and not entirely organized as we had to fight our way into the laboratory to perform the necessary medical tests. Sometimes I leave my house at 6am and return by 5pm without achieving anything.

The school environment then wasn’t entirely A class, but on the fair side. As an Engineering student in my 1st year I had to receive lectures in a large hall called the FEG Hall, usually very hot with students hanging around the doors and windows during lectures. By 2008, there were substantial changes with structures being constructed and larger lecture halls.

Learning in this Institution was such that you had to accumulate a lot in just a little time before exams. Normal Engineering curricular requires 5 years but I graduated in 4 years. It helped improve my assimilation rate and level of reasoning; but I had to do lots of cram work. Most of the lecturers did their best but just a few stood out by providing quality education. In some cases, we had lecturers who maintained a good relationship with students while others were rigid and very strict. As with every other Institution, there were lecturers who were always on top of their game, delivering accurate lectures by creating an imaginative description of what is being taught in our minds. We had a laboratory and workshop which was fair enough to do our practical work and project; though not fully equipped but just okay.

The transport system back then was fair enough, most of the buses that conveyed students to school were more like death traps; wobbling as they accelerate on the high way. The buses were usually uncomfortable as we had to be jam-packed in it. There were 14 sit buses and 40 sit buses, the luxury buses which would have been comfortable were non operational.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK as it was called was a placed where discipline is highly effected; nude dressing was not condoned at some point. Students who dressed indecently were sent home at the bus stand. There were cult activities but not as bad as it was in other Institutions back then. We had the special Anti Cult squad; a group of young men who volunteered to flush out cult activities from the Institution. This group severely dealt with most of the cult groups around to maintain sanity in the school environment. I was once harassed by some cultists, but I had the anti-cult to my rescue.

Accommodation was available to a few on campus, we had more of off campus accommodation at the permanent site and the temporary site. The accommodation included single rooms without in built toilet and bathroom especially at the hostel; it was a general bathroom for everyone. There were also self contained rooms which had its own dedicated toilet and bathroom. They were also affordable, depends on what you want.

Extracurricular activities in the school wasn’t really what I expected, the school had no standard football pitch, or basketball court etc. Social life wasn’t entirely available around school but you could have fun outside school. There were shows like the Jean carnival, the SUG night party and other parties being hosted by students and also shows by some of the new hotels in town during that period.

Three things I learned here are Discipline, Self Reliance and Excellence. These cultures were blended into the lives of every student. During examination periods, invigilators were usually very strict and ensured that students don’t cheat. Most times we get evenly distributed in a large hall in order to reduce the rate of malpractice. After exams, the results are usually published on a board for all to see.

Schooling in Nnamdi Azikiwe University helped me become a better person, it’s an institution where you have to adjust and learn in order to scale through. Once you are groomed here, I believe you can survive wherever you find yourself.

    Jenny.
