Good: TIU is an elite university in Uzbekistan. Being under the patronage of the Cabinet of Ministers means that it boasts a very good housing, campus buildings, other technical and logistical equipment and most importantly prominent teaching staff. A government decree has also made it possible for the graduates of this university to receive a 15 per cent additional salary regardless of the position or type of employment held by the graduates.
Most of the lecturers and professors are well-known for their academic contributions in their relevant fields locally and abroad. University also makes sure to engage high-ranking government officials and practitioners such as senators, judges and ministers to lecture in certain subjects, especially in the field of economy and law.
Two most popular faculties are (1) Law, Economy and Information Science and (2)Religious and Islamic studies(Theology). The former has graduates with such specialties as (Civil) Law and Islamic Law (i.e.Middle Eastern Law), World Economy and International Economic Relations, and finally Computer Systems Managers. The second faculty has graduates in Islamic studies and Religious studies. The third faculty is less popular, and has a very low number of places available. University has its own TV-studio which prepares programs for the Republican First TV-Channel. There are a number of research centers and a good library.
Admissions are very competitive and unlike other Uzbek universities interviews and oral exams are also held at TIU prior to the state entrance exams conducted on 1 August at the republican level.
Bad: Criticism mostly touches upon the extended academic curriculum, where a wide range of subjects are covered. Additionally to the ordinary subjects in, for instance World Economy that other universities also would teach, the syllabus contains also subjects focusing on social science related subjects, or too many subjects teaching Islamic finance and economy, which results in spending much of the time on unrelevatn subjects too. As a result, Bachelor studies last four years. University also has a dress code both for male and female students, and visible chest ID badges are required at all times on campus. Another critical point is the internationalization of the institution. There is a lot of interest among students of Central Asia, Russia and etc., to pursue education at this university, however, the actual numbers of foreign students immatriculated for full-time studies are nearly zero. Although, in significantly smaller groups TIU offers Russian language based instruction too.
