One Student Review of University College Dublin

  • My Experiences at University College Dublin (UCD) graduated 2011 are overall really positive. Firstly I would commend them on how the staff members and teams welcomed new students each year. The campus is quite big and has a lot of buildings so the environment seems huge in your first few days. To counter this UCD gets members of staff and students to guide new students around the campus and there is always receptionists in buildings to help you and direct you where to go. There is also a number of library tours throughout the first few weeks these tours help new students get to grips with the library and how it works from getting a book out to using the computers to locate academic journals etc. They also give out a number of free things to new students every year which is handy especially for students. With all this help after the first few weeks the campus seemed much smaller and not as daunting. The lecturers I had were all had a high standard of competency and ability as you would expect in a University but they also had a willingness to help the students if they got stuck or needed assistance I also got the impression that the lecturers had a genuine interest in helping the students learn and reach their potential. I did encounter some negatives in UCD namely the different buildings you studied in had a diverse range of facilities and technology for example the law building which I studied in had very basic facilities which included toilets and vending machines it had no café or computer room etc. Whereas the business building was a new building and it had top of the range facilities including café and full computer and printing rooms. I believe a new Law Building is in production to upgrade the facilities since I have been there. There is also a state of the art leisure centre in the campus which has free membership for UCD students which is very handy especially if you are on a students budget. There is also an abundance of café’s restaurants and bars throughout the campus these facilities have students in mind when they are considering the price of their goods and provide good quality at an affordable price. I really enjoyed the selection of Societies available to join at UCD there seemed to be one for everything I could think of and it was a handy way to meet people in the beginning and build relationships with like minded people. There was a problem with parking in the campus when I was a student there simply wasn’t enough parking spots for everyone so you had to get in early or just use public transport
My advice to anyone going or thinking about going to UCD would be to make full use of all the free guides and tours the University provides and also don’t be afraid to ask for help with anything as there is a large support base at UCD to help students. After the first few weeks and you will feel you have been there for years.
