I have recently completed my 4 year degree in Environmental studies from University of Karachi. Here are some information regarding University of Karachi.
University of Karachi is a public university located in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It has an on-campus student population of more than 24,000. Currently 2500 admin staff is employed at the university. It is ranked among the top three universities of the country according to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. The University also entered the THE-QS World University Rankings for the top 500 universities in the world in 2008. University of Karachi was established in 1951.
The University is also famous for being one of the largest universities of the entire country. The university campus is spread over 1,279 acres (5.18 km2) of land, situated 12 km away from the city center of Karachi. Every department of every faculty has its own separate building. The science departments have their own laboratories in separate buildings. Every department has been given an auditorium for lectures and workshops. In addition there are two separate hostels for male and female students lodging at the campus. Both the hostels are in two different vicinities of the university.
The diversity of students belongs to different backgrounds and cultures. Students from all around Pakistan come to Karachi to study at this university. About four percent of the university’s students are foreigners who come from 23 different countries in regions like Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and Europe. These students stay at the University hostel which is located inside the campus.
University maintains a high standard of teaching, with many professors being well-known scholars and academics of international repute and possessing Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees from abroad. In a short span of 40 years, the university has risen to acquire a high status in the field of education in Pakistan as well as regionally.
The University includes in total 23 Research institutes and centers. There are altogether 8 faculties and 63 departments/institutes. Karachi University owns its own press named “Karachi University Press”, it publishes university books and other materials.
The Dr. Mahmud Hussain Library is a three-storey structure, established in 1952. The library houses approx 350,000 volumes, some of them dating back to the 17th century. The library is also home to the personal book collection of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.
Teachers from over 100 affiliated colleges come to teach at the university as visiting faculty along with scholars from 19 research institutions. The digital library at the campus enables the scholars and students to access online books and journals. It takes a total of 125 staff members to help maintain the library. The building includes six reading rooms for general purposes and six for research.
Along with so many facilities that the university has to offer it also owns a bus service for students. These are urban buses used for the transportation of students from all around the city. It starts early in the morning and continues through out the day till night.
This university not only provides a quality education, it also grooms a student’s personality, through the recreational activities this university has to offer. A number of sporting events are arranged for the students to take part in. Tournaments are arranged for different sports in which students from all faculties take part. For these activities the University has a huge gymnasium for sport lovers where they can play all they want.
All in all this is the university where from an average student to a position holder, everyone can explore their hidden talents and their capabilities. Here rich and poor don’t matter. It’s a public university for all.
All in all I really enjoyed my 4 years at this University. Yes I had some minor problems, but they were no match to the facilities that I had over there.
A negative point which I can think of is the hostel building. The maintenance is not so good.
