U of M Dearborn is a great choice, especially if you are interested in digital marketing. Check out digitalmarketingdegreesmi.weebly.com to learn more about the program as well as other digital marketing degrees in the state of Michigan.
When I first started at U of M-Dearborn back in 2008, I was excited to further my education at the sister school to the Ann Arbor campus. I decided to enroll as a Computer Science major, as I had always heard that U of M-Dearborn had an excellent college of engineering and computer science. How has my experience been so far, after 4 and a half years attending? Not as great as I would have hoped.
Campus:
The main thing I love about U of M-Dearborn’s campus is the fact that it is always fairly clean and well kept. The sidewalks are clean and the grass is always cut. I also love the fact that the campus has now been “smoke-free” since 2011. While people still do occasionally smoke as they are walking, this new ban has definitely cut down on the number of smoke clouds I have had to walk through. The main thing to keep in mind about going here is the fact that the campus is extremely small. Walking from one end to the other takes around 10 minutes to complete. And unfortunately, there isn’t a ton to do. The main area that students hang out at is the University Center. While there is plenty of seating in this cafeteria-style area, it fills up quickly around lunch time. The University Center features a book store and a small section for ordering food/coffee. The McKinley Cafe features a Subway, the “Grille”, and Starbucks Coffee. The Grille’s food isn’t too expensive and their burgers are delicious. The cooks often prepare food ahead of time and place it under a heat lamp, so you simply walk in and grab your food. If the food you want isn’t under the lamp, simply request it from the cook. They have always been extremely friendly. The book store is as standard as you would see on any campus. It is filled with school apparel and overpriced books.
Outside of the University Center, the Mardigian Library is a great place to grab some quiet time. Pro-tip: Head to the higher floors if you want absolute silence. The lower floors can sometimes be a tad bit noisy. For additional free time, I often head over to the computer lab between classes. Every student gets $25 in free printing paper each semester, which is great. You used to have to pay 2 cents per page. Regarding the computer lab, it is normally super busy around Noon. Unless you’re a fan of looking around for an open computer, it’s best to bring your laptop and use the Wi-Fi.
Outside of campus, students often head across the street to Fairlane Town Center or down Michigan Avenue to Buddy’s Pizza. While the campus is decent, there isn’t a ton to do on a daily basis.
Professors:
The professors that teach at U of M-Dearborn are a fairly mixed bag. During my 4 years here, I have had some wonderful and extremely terrible teachers. To be honest, most of the CASL teachers were great, with the exception of one or two math teachers. My problem comes from my experience with the Computer Science department. A variety of the professors in this department continually teach recycled material and aren’t as friendly as they could be. As I always recommend, ask your friends and search for ratings of your teachers before picking your classes. It will make your semesters much more enjoyable.
Staff:
I will unfortunately say that for the most part, the staff at U of M-Dearborn are not the friendliest. I’m a student that constantly relies on financial aid to pay for my tuition, and their financial aid department is atrocious. Any time I have gone to drop off a tax return form or loan slip, no one ever greets me or acts friendly, even after I greet them. Another pet peeve with this department is the fact that their fax machine never works. I have told them this for years after repeatedly trying to fax them forms. Their machine always answers and hangs up. Because of this, I have to scan in each document to my computer and manually e-mail it over. Along with the long wait periods over the phone, they take days to answer simple e-mail questions. All of this is quite frustrating when trying to deal with your financial aid situation before the semester begins.
Extracurricular Activities:
I will say that U of M-Dearborn does a fantastic job at providing extracurricular activities for students to join. Pro-tip: Clubs are a great way to make friends with your fellow classmates. Throughout the semester, there are constantly new things going on around campus, from bake sales to bands playing in the University Center. It’s a great way to tackle boredom between classes. Along with the activities and clubs, the campus features a fieldhouse where you are able to workout, take a fitness class, or play some basketball, hockey, and volleyball. My only gripe about this facility is the price. With the amount that students are paying per semester in tuition, I think that this facility should be free to use. It costs $60 per semester. Regardless, there is a ton that you can do while you are there.
Housing:
Decades ago, U of M-Dearborn used to have on-campus housing for students. Those eventually closed and have sat dormant ever since. However, they have recently began constructing a new housing facility filled with student apartments that is straight across the street on Evergreen. This will be open in Fall 2013 and is a great option for students who live further away. I only live 20 minutes away, but some of my former classmates would commute from 2 hours away. Yikes!
Overall outlook:
I will say that while U of M-Dearborn continually prides themselves on their unique ways of teaching “outside of the classroom”, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Consider talking to other students who are majoring in what you want to go into and see how their experiences went. While an education major may say they learned a great deal, I will say that avoid U of M-Dearborn if you are going into Computer Science. There are many other universities around the state that offer better programs.
