Completely out of touch with American reality

By   |  September 5, 2008

I have mostly tried to ignore televised convention (Democrat and Republican) coverage, instead choosing to read about it the next day.  However, I did catch some news coverage on the Republican convention and I couldn’t help but be irritated by the number of old white men with smug, self-righteous smiles plastered on their faces.

Standing apart from such monotony, though, were the “supporting cast” of ladies – namely, Cindy McCain, John McCain’s wife.  You cannot help but notice her, and it seems that it’s for good reason: the outfit she wore last night was estimated to be worth over $300,000.  Seems to me that anyone who would wear a house’s worth of clothing, shoes and jewelry wants to be noticed; maybe they are even showing off a little.

We are facing a serious crisis with our economy in this country.  The exchange rate of the American dollar is downright embarrassing, two major lenders will most likely be under federal control by Monday, home foreclosures are at a historic high, and jobless rates are increasing, yet Cindy McCain has made it very clear that she doesn’t care.  (I would say that John McCain doesn’t care, but it’s more likely that he just forgot.)  American reality is grim; perhaps the candidates and their families should take a little more care respecting that.

I understand the importance of making a good impression, and it’s always important to splurge a little to show that you care, but $300,000??  Surely, this is over the top.  Does she even realize the message she is sending?

Take it down a notch, Cindy, because even though you are fabulously wealthy, the rest of the country is not.  Your husband is doing a poor job of trying to relate to the “common” man and you are not helping matters along.
