Degrading Messages Over Time
Hey all. The profile for this blog insists that I write about video games and express those views and opinions with the read, but I’m going to start with the most important message in life to know: Messages and meanings degrade through each transferrence.
Take a moment to review that and think about it while I grab a smoke. Okay, I’m back and you didn’t go anywhere. Messages lose their importance through each generation of passing the knowledge along. A perfect example comes with the concept of elves. They live for many generations of humans in books. Let’s face it, elves aren’t real.
So there is a basis that the elves always seem to make a deal with humans that involves peace and love. During this time there’s usually a young elf who watches what the humans have done and what the humans promise to do. This child hasn’t seen anything else of these humans and doesn’t truly understand them. As time goes on and the child goes through his or her “teen” years, the humans pass along the pact and slowly begin to lose the meaning and importance of the that was once made.
During the young and troubled times of the elf teen, He or she decides humans are bad and is constantly trying to get everyone to fight the humans. Let’s face, by the time everyone starts listening to the young elf, he or she is still young and not even beginning to understand the world. Take a lot of similar minded inviduals and bam! There’s a war against the humans faster than anyone could expect it!
Once again, this is a very simple way to start any story and introduce any simple war in a fantasy world. Bam, any one can write a fantasy world. How do you make yours different? Do you introduce the twisted uncle or aunt that wants to overthrow his or her sibling by supporting the young adolescent? Generally with elves, that’s a bit harder to get away with, because elves think very highly of themselves.
Overall message to be taken from this posting:
Understand the mechanics of a world before telling people about it and once that background of a world is solid, the player has a better chance of being won over and will continue to seek interest in the product.
