11 Student Reviews of Brown Mackie College : Merrillville

  • Brown Mackie Merrillville experience was a joke from the beginning. 3 people tried to talk me out of attending because I was pregnant. They felt that once I gave birth I would not wish to return. The director of the program taught almost all the classes. She was very rude, held grudges, and never made mistakes – even on exams that were fill in the blank word for word from the book and/or slides she would mark the ENTIRE class wrong without hesitation (this occurred several times throughout the year).
As for stimulating courses – one example: our pediatric class was taught by a woman who has only worked in geriatrics. I was frequently asking questions on how the geriatric examples related to children.
I requested a pediatric rotation for one of my 3 fieldwork opportunities and was told that it was not reasonable to “know” that I am going to work in pediatrics. She gave me 2 geriatric rotations and a mental health rotation. The girl that wanted mental health, did not get it. The 2 girls that actually stated they did not want to work with kids and did not like kids received pediatric rotations (one had 2/3 rotations in pediatrics). When we went to the director to ask to trade sites, we were told that she chose what was best for us.
I pushed through this clown college and made very good grades. I got my first job in pediatrics and found I knew nothing. Nothing at all. I spent the weekends researching to find out how to do my job. Luckily, I had an amazing supervisor who trained me on the job for 5 weeks to teach me the things I needed to know. I have worked in pediatrics since graduating.
The staff there, including the “higher ups” do not answer nor return calls in a timely manner. I get my transcripts in bulk because it takes “24 hours” to fulfill a transcript request. After calling for 2.5hrs and leaving 3 voicemails I finally got to talk to someone. When I asked why they couldn’t just push print, stamp, and seal, I was told because “I’m a one-person operation and have to have a protocol.” I’m sure they are flooded with transcript requests daily (sarcasm). The woman spent almost 5min on the phone with me, sent me an e-mail about 15min later with an attachment for transcript request, then we e-mailed back and forth with 4 e-mails. My thoughts: if I could just come up there, I could show you my license, you could hit print, stamp, seal and send me on my way. I spent the equivalent to graduate school per credit hour here and get told I can’t even get my records released to me in a timely manner. IUPUI has eTranscripts, I got my transcript from them in less than 15min (for my bachelor’s degree), or I could go to ANY campus and receive them on the spot for the same price and I spent over $200 less per credit hour at IU!!! (which shouldn’t be the case considering I received a BS at IU and only an associate’s at BMC)
Admin/enrollment lie. Do your homework. They are looking for money. That is all they care about. I had to take my transfer credits from IU to 3 people there and keep moving up the ladder before they accepted my credits. They tried to get 5 more classes out of me by telling me they wouldn’t accept my credits, thinking I would just accept their answers.
All in all, worst school I have EVER been to. I have taken classes at 5 colleges/universities and have never had experiences as terrible as Brown Mackie! I’m honestly not sure how they are accredited, but I do know they put on a show when accreditation agencies come and slack on student education to prep for it!

  • i have been at BMC for a few yeaars, 114 months til i graduate. last year i attempted to transfer to a major university. turns out that BMC San ANtonio and the dean and the ppresiident lied when they said the credits were transferablle. IF YOU ARE RESEARCHIING BMC FOR POSSIBLE EN4OLLMENT, DO NOT ENROLL. TTHIS SCHOOL IS A SCAM. I

  • I attended this school for a year before I HAD to pull out. When looking to attend this school, everything was sugar coated. Only taking one class a month, you’ll be finished in two years, financial aid is a breeze, the teachers are willing to work with you, and so on.

The school has a very scattered layout, the programs are RIDICULOUSLY expensive, most of the staff plays favorites and they do NOT follow through on making the student priority. If something serious has happend to you while attending this school, forget about getting any type of refund or classwork from the “teachers”. Everything from the Financial Aid to the classroom is very unorgainized. You DO NOT have classes that line up in order before entering your program(ex: Comp 1 then Comp 2, A+P 1 then A+P 2). My second class while enrolled was Medical Terminology, and my third was Anatomy. My surgical program didn’t start for another year.. The class schedule is scattered and not guaranteed. On several occassions I had classes doubled up without notice – meaning 8am to 12pm then I had to come back 6pm to 10pm. They don’t take into consideration your life OUTSIDE of class – how far you live, if you have a family, a job, etc. You are told one thing, and they do another. It’s like they’re playing ping pong and you’re the ball. 95% of the people that attend this school are VERY unhappy while they are enrolled. If you want a fast education that is worth the money, then go to another chain school like Everest or take classes online. This school is NOT worth your time or money! PLEASE do research before enrolling!!

  • Hello Anonymous and Jesse do not go to hard on Wendy she really does speak the truth about Mrs. Scott I attended the school a few years back and found out that Rhesa really don’t care about her job or the students on numerous of times she did not show up for labs we had to meet at a certain hospital for lab at one point and we was supposed to be there at 5am well the students showed up and we waited until 7am before we left because she failed to call or show up. NO explanation was ever given to us just an horrible attitude. This school is not a good school so please be careful and make sure your making the right decisions. The reason why you see a lot of teachers teaching more than one course when they are not qualified is because a lot of the good teachers left before the stuff hit the fan. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!! Overall this school is without a doubt a zero.

  • Wendy, I was in her class with you and you stopped showing up halfway through the class, so you shouldn’t have nothing to say. You can’t even make a complete sentence. I agree that the cost is ridiculous but to ridicule a teacher because you didn’t do your part is just plain sad. Good luck with getting your money back or go to Michigan City.

    Overall Score: (3/5.00)
  • I had Rhesa Scott as an Instructor and she was very good. If you failed her class its because you didn’t show up or you didn’t do your work. So Wendy stop hating and get your life together.

  • I really rate Brown Mackie with a zero because I heard students in class talking about how they was unacredited when they lied to me and others and
told us that they was acredited, the instructors are not qualified to teach classes at all,I had a woman by the name of Rhesa Scott who taught pharmacology, microbiology and was not even qualified to teach those classes for surgical tech, and she was also the coordinator for the program. She was rude, showed favoritism, act as if she really was not interested in teaching the classes at all. She was only a certified surgical techicians and good only in lab or other wise she could’nt help you much at all. I want my money back if anyone can help me please email me at [email protected] God Bless!!!

  • I went to the BMC in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. This is a high dollar college that delivers a low cost education. I was to far into it to quit when the reality of just what kind of place it was had become a reality. Go anywhere but here…please do not let them claim another victim by their smooth talk and empty promises. I would have given this college a rating of 0 stars if possible just as the person before me. I regret the day I walked in that door.

    Overall Score: (1/5.00)
  • Stay away from the Surgical Tech course, the professor Tara is horrible and should not even be teaching. She plays favorites to students while she has a personal vendetta against some students. The real horrible part of her is that she waits till students are a class away from graduating and fails them, this way she gets paid because the school gets paid. Stay way from the school.

    Overall Score: (1.54/5.00)
  • I would have given zero stars if I could have for most areas. Some teachers are good, but most are not. Many are late to class, do not grade consistently and are barely qualified to teach the subjects they are responsible for. If you voice your opinion or have a complaint, you will likely fail as I have seen this happen to other students. I’m in too far to leave now, but I wish I would not have gone here. It is very expensive to attend, about 3 times the cost of a state community college and your credits will likely not transfer due to the school having a different accreditation than others. Maybe other Brown Mackie’s are good, but this one is not.

    Overall Score: (1.36/5.00)
  • Uh, most likely the one person that gave this college 5 stars on Jan 2, 2009, is a marketing employee of the college. Don’t go here.

    Overall Score: (1.18/5.00)
