One Student Review of Drew University

Drew provides a very good education. Many of the professors are excellent, and unlike some larger school, students, even as freshman, have access to these professors. Excluding a few introductory classes, class are small(< 30 students), and upper level classes may have less than 10 students.
The campus is beautiful (very wooded), and is in a safe area. Being an affluent suburb, Madison isn't really a college town, but it does have a lot of stores and restaurants. It's easy to get a train to NYC from Madison. Serious crime is very rare, and it's safe to walk around town or into town at night.
Dealing with non-academic departments is about as much fun as dealing with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. For a small school, there is a lot of red tape. Housing and health services are particularly bad. Students are guaranteed housing for all four years, but getting your room requires standing in line for hours. Health Services is unprofessional, and its much better to go to an off-campus physician or clinic.
Social life is poor, and the university doesn't help the situation. Drew has always taken the stance that students should create their own social life. In the late 1990s when I attended Drew, the school had a lenient alcohol policy, and so there were some parties on the weekends, and a number of well-attended student-run events (e.g., Tent Weekend). Now, the school has really cracked down, and issues hundreds of citations every year for alcohol consumption. Besides that, the school's red-tape makes it hard for students to continue long-standing traditions even if no alcohol is involved. Most students now leave the campus on the weekend, or just watch TV in their rooms.
The school costs way too much. Not including books and personal expeditures, it's $52,500 per year. Financial aid and scholarships used to be plentiful, but a few years ago they eliminated their Drew Scholar program (full tuition scholarships) which allow me to go to Drew, and financial aid has not kept up with the tuition increases. If your family has a lot of money, or you can get a decent aid package, Drew might be the right school for you. However, I very strongly recommend that you don't go into debt to attend Drew.
