One Student Review of Durham Technical Community College

  • Durham Tech offers some really great programs and they probably would have a higher student enrollment rate if the school could actually stay organized.
The professors, instructors, and teachers are all really great and all willing to go the extra mile to make sure your learning experience meets the highest expectations! Every one of my instructors has been kind, patient, willing, and great over all.
Another plus is the website; it’s super easy to navigate.

The first issue with Durham Tech is probably the location. It sits in a rather “hot spot” in Durham and the surrounding areas have high crime rates. However, the school is exceptionally and safe and there are ALWAYS campus security guards patrolling the campus 24 hours a day. They go out of foot, bike, and vehicle. They also do a good job in pointing student sin the right direction AND they take the time to inspect vehicles to make sure they are permitted to be on campus.

Another issue is parking. I know they are working on it, but it seems like this has been going on for over ten years.

Also, now with the cut backs from the state for community college funding (Thank you very much Bev Perdue!!!!!!) There are a lot less class time options and the teachers are having to take on more students which ultimately puts the students at a disadvantage because its harder to work around a work schedule AND the instructor has less time for you on an individual basis.

LASTLY, the BIGGEST issue of all that I have heard from almost every classmate I have ever spoken with AND what I have personally experienced myself, is the lack of organization the school has. They are running behind on everything, and it doesn’t matter how fast you complete proper forms and turn them in within a timely fashion, Durham Tech still struggles with getting everything completed at the last minute.
I have had financial aide a few times through Durham Tech and even when I submit and COMPLETE my FAFSA application on the earliest day allowed, the school still doe snot make a decision until last minute. This delays my time to get to the book store and get the appropriate materials.
They also aver VERY unclear about the steps to properly take to complete a program. Their advisers and registration system is completely disorganized and you are often placed with an advisor who really has no idea the order you should take your classes to complete a program on time. They also leave out important information and have A LOT of middle man work that causes sever “Cross contamination” issues and documents and forms being misplaced.

I was warned last year when I started this college that I would become easily agitated and that I should look elsewhere. I believed everything my friend said, but I thought he had just ran into a bad experience that was isolated.
I now wish I would have LISTENED! Once enrolled I learned quickly that most other students were extremely dissatisfied with the time management and organization of certain departments.

After all I have said I must say that Durham Tech’s instructors are SUPERIOR and AMAZING! They do an unbelievable job in making sure their students are fully prepared.

Top Teachers Recommended at this School:

-Dr. Peter Charles (Biology/Science Dept.): ***** Very dedicated and goes beyond the call of duty to ensure each of his students complete his courses successfully! If a student asks for help, Dr. Charles is always willing to compromise his own personal time and and come up with a individual plans to ensure satisfactory completion of his courses.

-Dr. Steven Leadon (Biology/Science Dept): ***** Dr. Leadon is EXCEPTIONALLY organized and posses very strong time management skills. His lectures always stay within an appropriate time and never seem to drag out. Dr. Leadon is honest if he does not know the EXACT or proper response to a question, but always follows up after he takes the time to properly research the correct answer.
Dr. Leadon allows his class to engage in appropriate class discussion and welcomes questions and curiosity of all the sort.
Dr. Leadon also is very friendly and has a very good sense of humor. He is also sensitive to student’s personal situations and personal experiences.
Dr. Leadon also prepares his exams and quizzes with questions that prepare you for your program of study (Ex: Patient presents fever, and is anemic…..”
Dr. Leadon makes it easy to keep up and comprehend the material. Highly recommended!

I hope my review was helpful!

Wishing you the best in your college journey!
