4 Student Reviews of Grand Canyon University

  • I just completed my MS in Psychology at Grand Canyon University (GCU). I did the online program, although GCU also has a large on-campus location in Phoenix. They also offer hybrid learning for convenience. I am not sure what the warning about this school (on this website) is all about. But I assure you, you are wrong. This school is top-notch. It is a bit rigorous, so students looking for easy street will be in for a rude awakening. They may struggle and complain. There is a LOT of reading and writing/typing. Much is expected of the students, but then again, I was in a master’s degree program. So, this makes sense. I had a very good experience, although admittedly I was frequently stressed out trying to complete work by the deadline. This lasted for 2-3 years. It is hard work, but it is worth it in the end. Good results can come for students who are very organized and for those who do not procrastinate.

There is preview site for people interested in GCU: https://testdrive.gcu.edu/test-drive
It is pretty cool. You can see what the school experience looks like. You can visit the GCU website too. If you do not like what you see, you can move on. But other online schools do not offer this type of preview (I wonder why?!). Finally, Grand Canyon University is a Christian University. Some people have strong (negative) feelings about this. I would not be surprised if they are the ones writing the negative reviews, seeming as they always mention this. I can tell you that there is a simple weekly online prayer option for those that want to participate. I found most do not. It has no bearing on grades whatsoever. The prayers are basic. There is also mention of GCU’s Statement of Faith, learning, and Work in some of the classes. It is based in the Bible, but really it is about basic concepts like respect others as you want to be respected, be kind to others, help out those in need, etc. These are pretty standard universal principles of decency. There is no religious test and frankly, nobody cares what religion you are.

    I highly recommend GCU!

  • Masters is Psychology does not give enough info to complete many assignments, students need to do research constantly to complete the work. Practicum/Intern policies illegal, school will fail you 4 weeks ahead of taking a practicum/intern class if you cannot find one, state violation here, must get an incomplete, cannot fail you for class not yet taken. Schools policies do align with other states. Pass this school up for your academic transcripts sake!

    Overall Score: (2.36/5.00)
  • I will agree that the online workload is heavy at times. However, I came from a fairly rigorous schooling background, so it did not feel overwhelming.
I liked the consistency between classes. Each class was set up roughly the same, so I didn’t have to learn each individual professor’s style in order to succeed.

    Overall Score: (3.72/5.00)
  • I was in the Masters of Psychology Program (online) at Grand Canyon University. It was a nightmare.
First was the workload. This school claims to be for “working adults”. I work forty hours a week. How can anyone be expected to churn out an APA acceptable 10-12 page paper every week? On top of that there are the postings and of course all the reading you have to do. If you are working you will find the workload unmanageable.
Second, the instructors act like you are in some sort of boot camp. They are punitive and not instructive. They seem to think that you need a trail by fire in order to get your degree. Not a positive experience.
Third, when you complain about anything you are told that you are the problem.

DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL. The Masters of Psychology Program (online) at Grand Canyon University IS HORRIBLE.

I quit the program and I am now in a much better school. I will graduate next year.
