If you are looking to join Lakehead as a student, please read this. Joining as staff, you already know what you are getting into.
LU has the lowest grad intake, (or highest depending on how you see it). Anyone applying will most certainly be accepted. If you have low grades and feel like you deserve a second chance, please apply. Look elsewhere for a modern, fun university like UBC, Laval maybe. This is one for payers not keepers, no home feeling, nah.. wait you have money, we are listening.
Fees are very affordable and if you are local, OSAP will help you. International students who come here look like they smile out of helplessness. They have to pay a lot, some say they were expecting off campus jobs like their friends got in Montreal. Some try to transfer out and give up. let’s face it, this campus is not international friendly, we just need them to pay triple fees so our locals can enjoy this university. Academic policies are not sensitive to those whose native language is not English, the local students much less so. Internationals are seen as can been seen with eyes, heard as we hear most sounds and exist in LU without their presence being felt.
On campus Housing is excellent, though a quite expensive. Off campus housing is affordable but keep in mind that Thunder Bay has limited public transport. 3 buses – bus numbers 1,2 & 9 stop inside the campus at Agora circle. Frequency of these buses is roughly every 40 minutes. You should look for a place on these bus routes. It is highly desirable to have a car in winter when temperatures drop below 30 degrees Centigrade. Thunder Bay transit has an app to check bus called NextBus. The student bus pass is comes free from Lakehead university students union, LUSU. Masters students pay85 for the the annual bus pass.
Sports opportunities are excellent with auditorium, gym and swimming pool. There is a bike shop with bike rentals on campus. Lakehead has one of the largest on campus pubs called the Outpost. Outpost nights are every Thursday and open to outsiders as well. Outpost has lounge facilities during the day for students to have a beer with lunch while working on assignments. One kool feature is the on campus lake (Tamblyn) freezes in winter and students can skate on it.
Campus involvement is low, there are no programs/fun activities on or on campus that you can enroll for. MBAs get a tour to Old Fort William, which is highly recommended. The city of Thunder Bay is more like a small town, it may appeal to some who like to retire here and sip their coffee at 4pm before supper. If you really do sightseeing, you will be done in 2 days and have to live with the knowledge till you graduate. Rather live with the hope that someday you will discover the vast expanses of beautiful scenic views that lay hidden surrounding lakehead. Boring and the fact that amoeba also exists, accompany thoughts when you think about Lakehead.
Food: Outpost serves good+expensive food. Cafeterias are expensive and serve average food. There is no subway, asian food or any other option on campus. You have to drive or go to the nearest mall for better food. The good news is there are 2 Tim Horton’s shops on campus.
Jobs on campus are non existent, this is not a modern university campus that hires students. Summer jobs are rare. Masters students are out of luck as they will not be hired by the university unless all osap seeking undergraduates have been hired first, you get the idea. Outpost hires, but for some reason no international student is seen working at the bar. Volunteer opportunities may appeal to some who are wealthy and bored in general. Summer jobs are low, low paying or a combination. No one wants to talk about jobs after graduation because its a dream. Maybe in some far off land an opportunity awaits you, there is hope and there is life, you get a fresh start, may your best efforts bring fruit in success..yada yada
