2 Student Reviews of Middle Tennessee State University

  • Middle Tennessee State University wasn’t a horrible choice for me. They have an excellent music program, and my major was music production with a minor in English. I’d planned to go into studio work, but as it ends up, I’m now a full-time writer.

The campus is fairly large with an estimated student body of up to 25,000 undergraduates, which means the campus is typically bustling throughout the day, and at times it may feel a bit more like a festival or something with people riding around on their longboard and bicycles that go 10+ feet in the air. Often times there would be people playing music together in one of the great places to gather.

The library could use a decent fiction section, but it does offer a ton of resources, is several stories high, and gives students an excellent place to study or use the computer. Additionally, there is a computer lab that is often open way after hours, which gives students the ability to use the computer late at night if they need. Sometimes, this computer lab is open 24 hours a day.

The classes are what you would expect from a fairly large University. Some of the more common classes (such as introduction classes for music students) were stacked with up to 300 students, which may have made it hard to get any personal attention. That said, I never felt like a teacher was too busy for me if I needed to talk to them, even in these larger classes. For some courses, such as English courses and Math courses, the class sizes were much smaller. MTSU did a great job about this, and I don’t think any of my very specific content classes had more than 30-40 people in them. I personally didn’t like some of the English classes (Southern Literature and the Enjoyment of Literature) because I believe they taught that literature can be very exactly interpreted. That said, the reading material was all very important and very influential, so I can’t complain there.

The music program can be a bit hard to get into. You first have to take the introductory courses and then you must compete to get into the actual program itself. There were usually a ton of students trying to get in, and as such, candidacy didn’t guarantee a spot in the 50 or so available slots. Still, those with the best grades usually made the cut without a huge problem.

Almost all testing was done using scan-trons, and most of my classes involved the use of technology to make it easier to learn, such as computer-based projectors. The school had plenty of things going on for students, and the fraternities and sororities were generally not full of people hazing anyone. In fact, the fraternity for the recording program didn’t even require people to be in the recording program, and it gave people a ton of opportunities to collaborate and have fun together.

MTSU is also known for their avionics program, but I have no personal experience with this. Overall, I think it was a great school. While I personally prefer smaller settings, I think for the average student, MTSU offers a lot of pros vs. cons. Sometimes the administration and counselors would botch things up and cause you problems, but probably no more than any other school’s administration. I would definitely go back if I had the chance and wanted to continue my education in music.
