The 100% acceptance rate and low price leads to a incredibly diverse community. You have students who plan to transfer somewhere more prestigious and are justing earning core credits, students going for a trade certificates, non-traditional older students going back to school, and of-course students who probably couldn’t get in anywhere else. This diversity leads to inconsistency between courses in the level academic difficulty. The large number of adjunct teachers means that a lot of the bring non-academic professional knowledge to the table (every teacher in the business department has owned their own business). Most students are commuters, but the school does a great job of putting on activities and there are numerous clubs to get involved with. The South Portland campus is is one the prettiest places in southern Maine with two beaches, a lighthouse, and the historic Fort Preble. I recommend SMCC as a place to jump start your education or go back to school.
TERRIBLE! Not even worth the cheap cost…
