One Student Review of Tulsa Community College : Metro Campus

  • I never realized just how poor quality this college was until I went to California. I figured it was “normal” for me to email a counselor and never hear back from them. This happened to me every single time I sent them an email. I figured I was just sending it to a bad address. But no. My fiance tried to contact them (same email I used that was listed on their own website) and it took them two whole weeks to respond, in which he comments that his old community college would respond back that same day. And the response he received was less than sufficient so now we have to drive up to the college so he can ask his questions in person.

Can’t say the counselors are exactly friendly either. They’re not mean but the few time I’ve been in there they made it feel like I was wasting their time.

Aside from the poor communication, their website is a mess. It’s a maze to navigate and leaves a lot to be desired.

The teachers are average or below average. I’ve only had one teacher there who went above and beyond and he was an algebra/college algebra teacher.

I’ve also had a teacher who was not qualified to teach. Period. She was a veterinarian who picked up working there as a part time job because her clinic needed it. She was incapable of teaching the lab without the lab assistant (she was like a chicken with her head cut off the day the lab assistant was absent and ended up cancelling the lesson because she didn’t understand it herself) and taught her classes through YouTube. Yes. YouTube. I don’t mind YouTube videos being shown in class to aid the lessons but entire lessons, day after day, were nothing but YouTube videos lined up. She even admitted to us one day that she was learning the material as we went. I went to drop that class the same day I heard that. It wasn’t only me who had a problem with this but the entire class. How do I know this? They were ALL complaining in the hall one day about it. This is not an exaggeration.

And I don’t know if this is true for 2012 but back in 2010 I was told their math classes had switched over to a new system where the classroom was full lecture and the homework was done online. It wouldn’t bother me if I actually had the chance to work a few practice problems in class to find out my weak points. But alas, this was not the case. I would come home, do the homework, get stuck, couldn’t finish the homework and be back in class two days later moving onto the next chapter. Fun. I did ask about the problems I was stuck on and it was explained to me in class, but because of that particular teaching system I was only getting that specific math problem explained. I couldn’t try out similar problems to see if I had a thorough understanding.

The school is also overpriced. I’m a resident of Oklahoma it costs me $400 per class, including books and that’s without taking out a loan or financial aid. I figured this was normal and pretty much standard for all community colleges. I was wrong. My fiance told me for his previous college (Riverside Community College) was $400 a semester and that one semester included 3-4 classes. And that’s straight up cash.

Would I recommend this school to others? No. In fact I plan to keep my own kids away from it.

    Overall Score: (2.27/5.00)
