One Student Review of University of La Verne : La Verne

Here is a little story which changed my life:
I am twenty three years old and I am very happy with my degree from University of La Verne. At first glance, I felt skeptical attending this University. A couple factors in my consideration; lack of prestige, the area of location and the racial and financial controversies. However, in an instant, all this was proven wrong, and my life would be changed for the better.
My History: I dropped out of the UC system and was looking for a college to finish my degree (The reason was lack of direction as well as the constant increase of student fees). After taking one course in humanities at ULV; to my amazement, I found the students and faculty members to be very supportive, professional and content. Everyone was aware that education is what you make of it. Sure, I could’ve done what most people do, and stay in a University with great prestige and reputation, but with little help in finishing my goal(which is to complete my degree), which in itself may contribute to an unwanted reputation as a professional student with mountains of debt.
People lose sight of what learning and obtaining a degree is all about. It is not about the best parties or fraternities, but the best possible education for the least possible cost (i.e. obtaining my degree with no debt and presently pursuing a CSU Masters’ in Business Administration and working to find a accredited or UC Public Doctoral Program). Get it done and move on, but make sure you obtain the knowledge and professionalism to excel!
The rest of my three years at ULV, was very nice and smooth. I agree that there is still much work needed to be done at ULV. As an African American male, I am still bothered by statistics showing low college graduation and acceptance rates of African Americans (in particularly African American men) within this institution, however I do see great progress in how students as well as faculty members constantly inquire about how each student is developing. Regardless of gender, race, color, sexual orientation and religious affiliations, everyone is given an equal shot in accomplishing their goals and ULV is more than eager to serve its students.
Yes, there are better schools with better reputation, however I do believe if I did not attend ULV, I would not have obtained my Bachelors of Science degree, and would not be two classes away from finishing my MBA at CSU. The knowledge I gained from the professors, students and faculty is immeasurable. I hope in the future, we will see more positive reviews from ULV. Furthermore, although ULV may not be on your high priority list, remember, the best education for the least possible cost (of course factor in location, room and board, accreditation and transferability), is a smart education, regardless of the fluff some institutions push.
This is the best advice I can give, in particularly within these tough economic times(the fluff may not be pertinent to your pockets)!
Use your money wisely but of course have fun, it is college by the way!
Good luck on your academic journey!!
