I spent 4 years here with lots of scholarships and ended up with a CS degree and cum lade status. I was constantly frustrated with UMHB’s focus on flash over substance. The admin is absolutely abysmal and caused issues for literally every person I knew here ranging from classes getting dropped to funding errors in excess of thousands of dollars.
The campus is pretty fantastic, but feels unwelcoming like a house set up for tours; nobody actually lives here. The library is the only cozy place on campus, even when considering the on campus housing which is bare-bones but not awful. Living in the apartments nearby (Turtle creek) would save you lots of money if you can afford the out-of-pocket expense.
The academics are all over the place, some schools are scholarly and some are there to pad the number of programs. I can attest that the CS department was teaching obsolete material and was built to make sure no one could fail the program. It was unchallenging and the professors changed often during my time in the program. The nursing program, which is lauded as a great program, has lots of funding but was on academic probation in the past for a semester for not meeting testing standards. Overall the academics were very lacking, but you get really small classes most of the time which CAN allow for a lot of one-on-one with your professors. I personally never really felt like one-on-one was necessary because the material was fairly straightforward. The mathematics department was the only department I interacted with that impressed me. I wound up taking a math minor and had to work extremely hard to keep up with the classes here. Anyways, academics are fairly mixed but they really try to dazzle you so don’t be fooled.
The athletics are pretty great. You will pay money for the athletics whether or not you use them, so you have an incentive to use the facilities. The football team is UMHB’s moneymaker which is why the rest of the school suffers in admin and academics.
In the end I don’t think I would go to UMHB again. I was unimpressed with the pricetag for sub-par schooling and a campus life that didn’t really exist. Most people don’t spend time on campus, so walking around won’t really win you any friends. If you had money to blow, five years to burn, and a desire to spend time with a core group of people who will be friends for life this might be a great place for you. I went into UMHB wanting a good education in a place that provided cozy and homey nooks to study with friends and people everywhere that were open to chats. Instead I got a alright enough education from classes that don’t challenge you. Study locations that are nice are confined to the library. Almost any other place on campus is made to look modern and nice, but feel almost like hostile design was employed to keep it people free. The campus is quiet and void of people most of the time, and the people are generally in cliques already.
Maybe I should have spent less time working constantly to make sure I had money to live and good grades so I could enjoy myself. In the end despite living off campus most of the time, working through college, and getting tons of scholarships, I wound up having $25,000 in student loans by the end of it. To be fair this is low compared to other colleges, but I would almost guarantee yours will be higher than this. This is just a personal note, but make sure you have a job lined up out of college and start early. If you don’t have a job right out of college working at a Starbucks with your shiny new degree and thousands of dollars of debt is awful.
