University of Salzburg is located in Austria in the heart of Europe surrounded by Germany, Tzech Republic, Slowakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and Switzerland. Salzburg itself is a rather small but very beautiful and traditional city. It has an old city core which is certainly more than 400 years old and Salzburg is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in Austria. Salzburg is the city where the world famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born and up till today the University of Music is named after him and called “Mozarteum”. The University offers many studies like Catholic Theology, Law, Social and Cultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, School of Education and as mentioned above the Mozarteum (University of Music).
Was does Salzburg offer it’s students? Due to the Mozarteum and also the Salzburger Music Festival Salbzurg is a rather international city and there are numerous students from abroad. But one must say that Salzburg is still a provincial city compared to the capital Vienna. And you will not see as many international students as in Vienna for example. Of course Salzburg, as every academic city offers students certain activities and it always depends on one’s own motivation if you want to take part in it or not.
How is Salzburg’s nightlife? There are many cool bars and two or three clubs in the city of Salzburg. Depending on the season the nightlife can be exiting and filled with students but in summer when many students have left the city the nightlife has a different character, more touristic and less academic.
I studied Communication Science at the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences. This faculty has the biggest number of students which sometimes results in difficulties to participate in the class or seminar you would like to attend because the number is sometimes restricted. The number of students allowed into lecture on the other hand s is never restricted. The academic level of the lectures is pretty good and a wide range of topics is offered. The facilities and buildings are mostly modern and they give a good atmosphere to study. The content of the lectures and classes is profound and interesting. The teachers try to make it close to real life and usually try to engage students by making them hold their own presentations to the other students.
Over all I would recommend Salzburg as a place to study if you are someone who likes a rather provincial atmosphere and less international relationships to other students. Salzburg is a pretty, small and clean city and especially if you are a music lover or you consider studying music or an instrument, Salzburg is definitely a well known place and highly recommended. It is a beautiful and safe place to study but you might wanna consider Vienna as an alternative as well: due its size and internationality it could be a very good city for a foreign student as well.
