I am just completing my undergrad degree at USD, and overall, am satisfied. The courses can often be too easy, but it is what you make of it. I think that someone who wants a rigorous education can find it here, but unfortunately, the grading is often too easy and lenient. Beware that there are lots and lots of trust fund babies all over campus, and many are vapid, shallow and do not belong at a university. The professors are for the most part engaging, friendly, approachable, knowledgeable and will challenge you if you let them. I imagine that they get tired of dealing with whiney rich kids who think they can complain their way into an A, and as a result grade easily. USD is completely lacking in any kind of political engagement or activism. As a commuter student, I receive that kind of stimulation elsewhere and typically just go to campus for classes and leave as quickly as possible. If you are bubbly and blonde, you will love it there. If your idea of a good time is bitching about “having to read so many books” for class and getting completely wasted each and every night, you’ll love it there. If you want college to feel just like high school, you’ll love it. However, if you seek late night discussion with friends about current events, enjoy reading for fun (what a concept!) and feel passionate about anything other than your iPhone, I would consider another university, or at the very least, expect to work hard at getting your money’s worth at USD. As I said, it can be done and the professors make up for the incredibly spoiled student population, but you have to work for it.
