I did, and she placed me in all the courses that I am required to take for my first semester. Two weeks later, my prof emails the class (and luckily enough, I checked my email in the middle of August!) to let us know if we are in section A for Course 1, we have to be in section A for every single course. Reason being that different profs are teaching with different syllabus.
This is clearly a problem because it demonstrates a lack of unity and uniformity in the program. This means my friend and I could be in the same program, but be taught different things even though we are taking the same courses (same course codes). Sure, at the end of the day we’re both getting the same diploma, but our experiences are different and it really sets a confusing program expectation for future semesters.
Anyway, so I had to switch my classes around again and email the same lady to get these switches done because all the required courses are full now. The program advisors tell students, “if you email her, and let her know you have to take this course to be in the program,” she’ll put you in the course.
So really, I am understanding this as a big opportunity for the program advisors to step up and improve the system. It raises a lot of questions: If we were to take specific courses with specific sections, why were we free to choose any sections? Why can’t the faculty just make up specific schedules for each registered student so that the profs and students both know what to expect, who to expect, and how many students to expect? I can’t imagine this lady can keep enrolling students into a class, seeing it’s probably a fire hazard to stick 60 people in a 30-person room.
Secondly, one week before starting classes, I printed of my schedule. The first week of classes, a prof made us look at our online schedules and I realized a class has been changed to a different time slot. This was done with no prior notices, no follow up notifications. This is a problem because if students have other engagements, everything now needs to be reorganized for this error. And it is an error because it should be the faculty’s responsibility to notify students of any changes, especially one this major and of this importance level. They also really should’ve been finalized weeks before open enrolment because, again back to this question, what’s the point of open enrolment if you can’t commit to providing students what you promised them – a specific course at a specific time slot.
I am speaking specifically about the CAB program at Markham.
