Carleton University is a fantastic place to learn and grow. There are a great deal of amenities on the campus, and near it, as well as fantastic people to work with both in both administration and faculty. Carleton has a reputation as an easy university to get into, which is largely accurate. Though it should be noted the rules for graduating and the standards within the university are stringent which makes it a challenging place to graduate from. If you are looking for easy go someplace else, if you are looking to learn the skills you need to succeed and challenge your mind you are in the right place.
The university offers a stimulating variety of courses. They range from courses in earth science, to physics, to political science and onward. There are even courses in paleontology, oceans, and many more. In fact there are over 1500 listed courses. This is made possible by a top tier network of professors from some of the best universities on the planet, from Harvard to Peking University. All of whom are considered top tier researchers in their field, which makes Carleton an ideal place for a student looking to become an academic. Classes are smaller than at most other Universities due to the lack of really large lecture halls on the campus. This means most classes top out at 100 students. (A select few are larger) One may also opt to take certain courses via distance.
Most students who choose to study in Canada’s capital have an interest in government, or the functions of the various government departments. (IE the Supreme Court, Bank of Canada, Military, etc.) In terms of networking and career opportunities there is no better place to be than Ottawa for these sorts of careers. The small size of the city means you will inevitably get to rub shoulders with some of Canada’s most powerful politicians, as well as a fair few foreign visiting dignitaries. In fact it is a near weekly occurrence to have an ambassador from one of the over 100 diplomatic missions in Ottawa on campus for a guest lecture. It is one of the only institutions in the world where it is possible to listen to representatives from the Palestinian Authority and Israel in the same week, let alone at the same location, and learn both sides of a long fought battle.
Carleton is in a picturesque setting, and an ideal location for the outdoors enthusiast. Sure it is in the middle of a city which offers all amenities, but at the same time is surrounded by parks and waterways on three of four sides. The parks themselves go on for miles with paved running and cycling paths which are kept groomed year round. There is express bus and train service to amenities such as groceries, and there is a gentrifying neighborhood (Old Ottawa South) within walking distance, where lots of nice coffee shops, bars, and restaurants have opened up.
Affordability is key for post secondary education these days. Carleton University has one of the best scholarship programs with pre set renewable entrance scholarships for most students with the marks to go. No contests, all you have to do is have a certain mark and they will give you the money, the only person you are competing with is yourself. Further the institution has one of the best Co-Op opportunities, so in addition to being good for future job prospects and gaining experience, these paid positions help to defray the cost of post secondary education. In fact they also pay better than similar positions outside of Ottawa because most of them are with the Federal Government.
On campus housing is offered to all First Year students and is financially comparable to living off campus away from home. In recent years housing for upper year students has been expanded, though there is lots of affordable quality housing available within walking distance, which is key in the winter.
Carleton has a large selection of varsity teams, and over 100 clubs and societies, as well as two campus bars. All of which makes for a vibrant atmosphere. There are also two fitness facilities located on the campus.
Looking forward the library is undergoing a massive renovation which will bring it into the digital age, and open it up to natural light. This will create a calming study environment for the growing student body.
In short I would recommend Carleton to any student looking for the above.

The campus is big, the res’ are a little far and maybe a little small (the ones I saw anyway) – the people seem nice (esp. the business boys, hehe); checked out some classes which seemed cool. A lot of asian people,….felt like I was overseas, but met some cool ones!
I have to agree with Cassie on the ugly fraternity guys comment; I guess it’s not like the States where they have standards to get in… but I’d say they’re more fugly than ugly Cass!! Hehehe. They totally pulled down my “hotness factor” stars, hehe.
See you in the Fall 2009 dear Carleton!!
Carleton is awesome!
Courses are fantastic, teachers are helpful, buildings are HUGE (you can get lost in those tunnels!) It feels like a big American campus.
The only problem is all those ugly Frat guys!! Yuck!
