Great institution!
Eastern really is a wonderful school. Small classes and dedicated professors can be found in every department (though you will come across some less enjoyable faculty as well). Eastern is a teaching 1 University, which means the focus is on the classroom, not research. Eastern’s education program is fantastic for you future teachers, but even if that’s not your path, there are still a lot of great opportunities and programs there. The campus is quite nice, and right off of main street if you are looking for some fun city activities. You do need to be careful though, as the campus is not far from a shadier part of Willimantic (the campus itself is very safe). It’s a liberal arts university, with requirements for public service in many majors (as well as dorm life), so be prepared to be part of the community. Most of the curriculum is centered around critical thinking, and practical use – but there is a reason why the communication major is seen as a bit of a joke. The major faults of Eastern are within a few small departments. First, if you are really hoping for job placement after you graduate, Eastern is not going to provide it. They set up a couple of job fairs each year, and if you have an in with a particular faculty member, you might make some good connections. Otherwise, you are on your own. Second, if you are going in confused about what you want to do, academic advisement is not going to be much help. Your best bet is to get a few ideas going on your own, and then go speak with the department heads about what the major entails, and where it might lead you. As to these two things – there are work around for the problems with these departments (like having a good relationship with a couple of professors, or going to the departments and seeing what they are all about). My biggest complaint about ECSU, and this is not singular to me, is the financial aid department. If you never have to deal with them, wonderful! If you are a grant/scholarship/loan student, expect a headache every time you have to deal with them. They are extremely disorganized, constantly losing paperwork and making errors in student accounts. 90% of the time, you are dealing with student workers who, bless their hearts, have no clue what they are doing. I would say 6 out of my 9 semesters at Eastern; I had to deal with this department due to an error they made. If you manage to avoid the F.A. office, I think most people will find Eastern is great place to get an education, and enlightened.
