3 Student Reviews of Jacksonville State University

  • Not the best place to go if you want motivated professors. A lot of JSU’s profs have master’s degrees from the school and are given some kind of “visiting professorship” which makes it seem like the school can’t attract faculty from outside of its own little bubble.

The town is super sad. There’s one non-college bookstore in the place and it sells stained used books. There is nothing to do in town except go to Brother’s Bar. Most of the students do drugs and those who don’t are churchy and naive.

The marching band is the best part about the football season and even then it is run like a cult.

Contemporary majors don’t really exist on this campus. There are no classes in neuroscience or data science even at the graduate level.

All of the cool professors have been forced to quit. There used to be some really neat old guys and gals up there but that ship sailed. Leading scholars were encouraged to retire and that is pathetic.

It costs too much to go here. There’s not enough parking. There aren’t enough dorm rooms. The Greek life is 100% white guys and girls who all live in a princess tower in the middle of campus.

    Overall Score: (2/5.00)
  • I attended JSU for both my BS and my MA. It is a bad school. The office that is supposed to help student, run by the daughter of the vpaa/provost, is a joke. They “helped” me sort out my resume — which was then laughed at by not one but two employers.

Beyond that, I was never encouraged to attend conferences while at the school. Any programs or clubs that did those sort of things were closed and cliquish — people who wanted in to some programs (like the biannual trip to Italy) were selected on lottery and most people who were allowed to sign up first (read: pets of administrators and faculty) later didn’t go, forcing willing students to give up a possible seat. So outside of the classroom opportunities are rare and restricted to kiss-ups and followers.

Professors are terribly demoralized. All of my profs sneered and mocked the administration which was completely out of touch with student and teacher needs. Lots of people there who have their jobs under “shady” circumstances, including several sons, daughters, wives, and husbands who, while technically qualified, have no business or motivation being in the positions they hold.

Lots of nepotism. Lots of cronyism. JSU is controlled by the First Baptist and United Methodist churches in Jacksonville. Favoritism towards “Christians” (read: white, straight, have kids, have a spouse, vote GOP) is evident. Cultural, racial, ethnic minorities do not even reflect the population of the area.

Racist. Nepotists. Over-priced. Few options. Few local jobs. Hateful people. Go somewhere else and try to be happy.

    Overall Score: (1.45/5.00)
  • This school sucks….do not go here….unless you are in a frat or sorority you wont matter….Ladies, if you go here stay away from frat parties, their are a high number of rapes at these and the university police and the university just cover it up….the academics are laughable, some of the professors are great, but most should not be teaching…..their are no campus activities outside of frats or sororites….they have really screwed housing up, upperclassmen are only allowed in a few dorms, and they are really bad, freshman can pretty much live whereever they want on campus exept for the campus apartments…the only good things about this place is the cost and the library.

    Overall Score: (2.18/5.00)
