One Student Review of Georgian College : Orillia

Georgian-Orillia has been the worst post secondary experience of my life. I attended York during the prolonged 2009 strike. While most students would tell you that experience was a nightmare, it has nothing on the few weeks Georgian and all Ontario colleges were on strike. The college never once informed new students of the possible strike. Not through mail, email or phone call. They simply decided not to prepare their CLIENTS (students). I was communicating with a financial aid officer. One day she was answering my emails, the next she was gone. No out of office message, no mention of the possibility that she might disappear on me. I never heard from her again. I had to call the school several times (after the strike was over!) to get an answer to a simple question. It wasn’t until I left an angry message that someone finally got back to me. The staff is neglectful to say the least. Considering they’re such a small institution, you’d think they’d be on top of things. Think again. The instructors are okay. I’m taking an online grad program and it’s really a toss up. Some are awesome, others are terrible. I have one instructor who is so unorganized I don’t know how she functions. She never seems to know what’s going on, doesn’t explain anything well enough and trying to find information on Blackboard is like a treasure hunt. She recycles her material, doesn’t update or format anything properly and reprimands students for her mistakes. Apparently she’s top notch in her field. That’s wonderful. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter how successful you are in your field. Teaching takes skill, it’s not a popularity contest. It’s insulting to have to pay so much money for this sideshow.
