save your life, time and money!!
I have studied in Jiangsu University and want to release a serious warning to other students, specially prospective ones, about this institution.
Many students are attracted to this university because of it`s low price, however when they arrive in Zhenjiang, the problem starts.
The university, despite being traditional in China, is NOT prepared to handle foreign students at all. There is no experience and seriousness in the quality of teaching, since they have only graduated one class of medicine and (business). Everything was made up in a hurry way to collect money for the institution and until now no foreign student has ever gotten a degree in Jiangsu University. The first medicine class will be due this year (2011).
The university will use a pressure technique to make you pay quickly , before you have time to see the university for yourself.
As soon as the student arrives in Zhenjiang, the financial secretary will pressure the student into paying right away 2 full semesters very quickly. If you are staying in a hotel, they will persuade you to move to campus at once. This way they can further exert more control over the student and their money and guarantee the payment of the tuition fee. They do this because a lot of students in the past used to come to Jiangsu University and in the first weeks give up studying and paying their fees because of the infra-stuctural conditions.
So, let`s talk about those conditions: (PS: You won`t find this in CUCAS)
After the tuition fee is payed, the student will then realize the mess he has gotten himself into.
First of all, there is a curfew. You cannot leave campus apartment building after 10:30 at night, and if you try to come back to the building will be closed. You will need to fist hammer the glass door with your fists and the janitor lady will make you sign a term and scold you because she will be sleeping at 11 o clock square.
You also can`t invite anybody togo to your small dormitory, oh you made a new chinese friend? Forget it, they are segregated from the foreigners and can`t even step inside the building…
Now into classrooms: How would you feel if you were a business student and studied side by side with medicine students? ?????
Yup, that`s Jiangsu University folks!
You`ll get the great experience of studying side by side with students from other disciplines because of their lack of curricular planning. Be ready for large class sizes as a bonus .
It`s disturbing to find black mold in the walls and a strong urine and feces smell very close to the classroom. The toilets are adjacent to the classrooms and they emanate a very strong smell.
There are chinese hole toilets in the foreign classroom section.
Meals: It`s one area of the university that is alright. The cafeterias are good and serve good cheap food which you can buy with a meal card, however be aware that lunch is 11:30 Am and dinner is 5:00 to 5:30 PM at 6 everything is closed. Plus you cannot cook in your prision cell dorm, but in a communal area only which will always be full and stinky.Hmmm
Campus dorm: to put it in two words: prision cells. You have a curfew and cannot leave after 10 PM , be ready for inhaling some spices, there are a lot of indians students smoking and making noise in the corridors, some of them play cards until 3 AM on the hall. Hmm forget about having a nice rest.
Oh you want to live outside the campus? Sorry but you can`t, if you really want to , they will threathen you by saying they will expell you.
Quality of teaching: The teachers are chinese and speak very poor english, actually they don`t mind being corrected by the students a lot. No matter what course you choose, Jiangsu university will have a surprise for you: The first 6 months will be just chinese and math; yes even for medicine.
City: Zhenjiang is a very small and boring city, a little polluted, but it`s alright. You can go to Nanjing and Shanghai but the train station is one hour away from the campus.
0-10, I`d give it a 3 , you can for the same money, study in a much better city and university and have more freedom. If you were lucky enough to find this before you enroll, don`t make the same mistake I did. Stay away! If you choose to apply and come, remember, you have been warned!
