My review is based on my experience with AAU’s online education program. I attended two semesters and after my first semester noticed flaws that I brought to the attention of administrators and was told I wasn’t the only one. I was assured that these problems would be addressed and I would notice a change by my next semester. The flaws were that videos were out of date. Materials used to teach students were decades old sometimes. Professors (if that’s what you want to call them) were horrible with communication. As an online student, we pay the same tuition as the on site students. The problem is they don’t provide the same level of education.
My next semester was worse. I did FT and I couldn’t manage. The Work load was absurd. Some classes expected so much discussion participation that I didn’t have time to participate in real life discussions with my family. The instructions for assignments were so vague that even the teachers assistants in the class didn’t understand them fully. If you ask an instructor it would sometimes take 2 or 3 days for a reply. One time I didn’t get a reply till the module ended and the assignment was already due.
As for the “professors”, they aren’t professors. They are people all around the globe that have day jobs in said industry and they have huge egos. They didn’t go to college to get a degree in teaching yet here they are teaching college courses. Because they have day jobs they don’t have time to dedicate to teaching so the students don’t get what they are paying for.
You’ll hear from people for AAU’s online program saying “you’ll have a great portfolio” and “blah blah”. Big deal. You can have a great portfolio anywhere you go. That’s on you to have that. It comes from the work you create, not them. If you don’t learn anything though or get a bad education and a headache full of stress doing so it isn’t worth it. As a student, if I’m going to go into a long time of debt, I’m going to do that getting an education that I feel good about. AAU I don’t.
Please don’t get me wrong, there on site college classes are amazing. Online though is not. It’s been made as an extra way for them to make a buck and they don’t pay attention to it. It’s not worth it. Please, think hard before dedicating and throwing your money at them.
