2 Student Reviews of California State University : Los Angeles

  • I’ve received my B.A. and M.A. degrees from CSULA. Studying there has been a great experience overall. CSULA does a good job providing students with internships and opportunities to try themselves in the field, be it engineering, anthropology, or any other area of study. For example, in the past several years some engineering students were involved in a project funded by NASA. Every year archaeology students have field trip classes during which they work on San Nicolas Island and in the desert around China Lake. These are just two of the many examples. The university also provides students with funds to attend out of state conferences and present their papers there. However, to seize these types of opportunities you have to be active, apply, work with your professors, and meet the deadlines.

CSULA holds job fairs and employment trainings several times a year. I advice going to those because they give students a chance to meet people from other universities, apply for various programs and jobs, learn how to write successful resumes and cover letters, and teach other basic things that are often overlooked but can be vital once we are ready to get out there and seize job opportunities.

Another thing worth mentioning is a relatively low cost of CSULA. If you do not qualify for financial aid, the cost of attending this school will be lower than some others. Also, there are always various kinds of scholarships, and it’s up to every student to make an effort and get them.

Attending this school gave me an opportunity to meet some very interesting and inspirational people among both my professors and my fellow students. I’ve enjoyed most of my classes because the professors were engaging, motivating, and passionate about the subjects they taught. I can hardly think of a professor who was boring, detached, or unfair to the students.
That said, I would advise new students to be active during lectures. Also, go to office hours often and get to know your professors well. These will be the people who assist you with your studies and research as you move along on your path of learning. They will also be the ones you work with when the time comes to write your thesis or take the comprehensive exam. Also, upon your graduation with either Bachelors or Masters Degree you can turn to them for the much needed references and recommendation letters.

While the classes and professors are great, I cannot say the same about administration services. I’ve known several people whose paperwork was lost in the process, and they had to go through a lot to set their things in order. The same goes for the Financial Aid office. If you ever have to use their services, I suggest that you keep a copy of every paper you ever submit, call the office right away if the things seem to take longer than they should, and remember names of the people who process your paperwork. If they do not respond on time, chances are they’ve forgotten about you or misplaced something!

There are several big parking lots in CSULA, but the parking situation still needs some improvement. Quarter parking permits are not cheap, and one would expect to park within a couple of minutes after arriving to the lot. Forget about that for the first two-three weeks of the quarter! You better arrive to school half an hour before your classes start if you want to make it on time because you’ll be going around and around looking for a spot. If you ever attend CSULA and encounter the parking problem, there is one particular place where people don’t like to park, and it always has free spots. The “problem” with that parking lot is that students have to climb a 100+ step stairs to get to their classrooms. This is not a problem for those who want to park fast and get some exercise at the same time. Just ask around and people will tell you where this parking lot is.

I could criticize some minor things. For example, my department office hours were short, and I would often encounter a closed door in the middle of the day when I needed help. Also, during my four years in CSULA I have witnessed some tensions between several professors who apparently didn’t get along well. However, as a student, I tended to focus more on myself, my studies, the knowledge provided by my great teachers, and all the positive experiences.

I would like to emphasize the importance of working with the professors. CSULA classrooms are relatively small comparing to some other schools. This gives every student an opportunity to communicate with teachers and advisers. Some people go through college and university without ever knowing the name of a person who sits next to them, without ever saying a word in the classroom. During my time in CSULA I learned that professors actually wanted us to talk to them, and they loved to help students who were passionate about their majors. Use the professors, learn from them while you can, and your university experience will be so much greater than if you just attend the courses and rush out.

Oh, yes… Some CSULA students have complained about the campus. In reality there is nothing wrong with it. It is small, yes, and not as pretty as some other campuses I’ve seen, but I hope people are not choosing schools on the basis of their prettiness.

While I was studying there, there were several robberies, mostly in the parking lots after hours. Some lectures end well past 10 pm, and walking through the lonely, dark campus can be scary and frustrating to some individuals. There is a service in CSULA where you can call, and a campus police officer will meet you and walk you to your car. Don’t hesitate to use it if you feel uncomfortable. They are there for us.
