This post is for prospective students:
Pros: The reason to go to college is to get a high paying job after graduation. Lehigh has a very high job placement rate (especially for Business and Engineering). However, the liberal arts education is not very prestigious and job recruiters and few and far between for English/poli sci majors etc.
The campus is beautiful. Forget it being hilly, after a week you get used to it – it is a non issue.
After big intro classes are completed, the average class gets smaller and smaller (between 30-40 your soph year to 10-20 senior year).
Cons: (I am speaking to typically outgoing “normal” kid) College is also for partying. Lehigh takes work hard play hard to the extreme, work all day, drink all night. Typical party schedule for greeks was party tues, thurs, fri, sat. I’m not exagerating. It used to be (NOT ANYMORE) joining a fraternity or sorority meant living in a huge house 40 people, with two giant party rooms (50 foot bar, 200 person dance floor) closets full of beer cans. Now, rarely do fraternities have parties on “the hill” at their houses because campus cops give underages to everyone and fine the kids in the house thousands of dollars, providing to minors etc.
So kids now are starting to move off campus (almost all seniors by now) – but south Bethlehem is a terrible neighborhood. Literally, and you can look at the police reports, two or three kids a month get mugged and beat up, houses get robbed all the time, cars get stolen, and girls will not walk home alone. But the Lehigh/Bethlehem cops are more concerned with a drunk freshman than the safety of the students.
Cons, it is a research school (meaning teachers get hired to teach and do research), a lot of teachers are HORRIBLE. They are off the charts smart and bring good publicity to the school but they are miserable teachers (especially the math departments). Keep that in mind when deciding.
There is no school spirit – everyone hates the administration because you feel used and nickeled and dimed after you graduate. No one even goes the football games (everyone just tailgates (which are not even that fun anymore because cops again, are so strict). Sporting events forget caring, maybe one or two big games but all in all, no school spirit.
Most of the kids are from NJ NY or PA. No real diversity, and they bring a fair amount of speakers to the school but again, no one goes, there is no school spirit.
As far as dating… forget about it, Lehigh is for “selfish” very motivated people. College is a time for getting the best grades which then gets you the best job and that takes a toll on relationships at the school.
Summary: I got a great education at Lehigh which landed me a wall street job. I have 15 extremely close friends from Lehigh who are all doing equally well. No one I know says they will ever give a penny to the school. The administration and the police ruin the college experience. And Bethlehem is an awful town, in the middle of nowhere pennsyltucky.
Hope this helps.
