2 Student Reviews of Fashion Careers College

  • I attends this college for fashion design. I dedicated almost 2 years entirely toward my education, eating straight A’s and never missing even one say of school. I entered the school with several years of sewing experience, and can’t really say I was ever pushed to learn more than I already knew. The entire program is set up for the slowest learners and students who never show up to school. There were maybe 2 or 3 classes that I felt truly stimulated in. Let me go through my rating by subject.

Stimulating courses: If you’re entering with any prior education in sewing, patternmakimg, etc, it’s a joke. For my peers that were new to the field, I noticed they were often not taught basic skills. Several months into the program, some of them were still struggling with threading sewing machines.

Professors: I did have 3 or 4 professors that I still very highly respect; there were some that were quite knowledgable in their areas. However I did have some professors that would spend most of the class outside on their phones. Teachers very rarely were willing to work with advanced students.

Networking and job ops: Initially, the school was great with helping me network and get internships. Like I mentioned earlier, I graduated with straight A’s and no absences. I was never once asked by the career placement service what I wanted to upon graduation. Upon graduation, I was told that the jobs the school could connect me to payed only $2 over minimum wage. I’m still not sure how they can expect students to pay off their debt from school and live in southern California only making $2 over minimum wage.

Area around campus- it’s close to a bus stop, a few restaurants, and a grocery store

Affordability- this depends a lot on if you have anyone helping you pay (family, husband/wife). Looking at making $2 over min wage post graduation, it’s completely unaffordable. Hopefully someone will help you.

Housing- I temporarally lived in the school housing. I had lots of problems with the plumbing, which was old and didn’t work well. Mostly, I had HUGE problems with bugs and mice, especially in the kitchen eating my food. When I approached the school with the problem I was told there was nothing they could (more likely would) do about the problem, so I’d just have to go get mouse and bug traps on my own. I moved out shortly after.

Extracurricular ops- lots of little events that students can sign up for.

Student teacher ratio- Fairly small; I was told meant plenty of one on one time with teachers. Really, it meant plenty of time for me to stare at a wall while the teacher talked on the phone or helped students who had skipped 2 or 3 classes catch up.

Administration/staff- never interacted with them much, but the little I did they were vey helpful and kind.

Hotness- Not a particularly well known college, those that do know of it never have much to say about it.
