One Student Review of Krakowska Akademia Imienia Andrzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego (KA)

  • In 2009 I had the opportunity to attend Krakowska Akademia im. Andzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego (KA) in Krakow, Poland. I studied there for one year before switching my major and my university. While I attending KA i chose the International Business degree in English. After a year’s time of study, and two final exam sessions, I decided that the major I was pursuing was not right for me. The university, however, was quite nice. The KA campus, although small, was brand new, clean, and filled with friendly students and staff. There was a minimal risk of ever getting lost on campus and not being able to find the correct classroom. The campus cafeteria was also excellent, not a large selection, but the food offered was delicious and cheap (around $5 for a two course meal). The campus itself was located minutes away from the center of Krakow, with ample transportation options, with both bus and tram connections nearby.
Having decided to attend university in Poland instead of the USA, I needed to navigate through a legal obstacle course having my diploma, grades, and various other papers translated into Polish and and approved by their department of education. All throughout this process the staff of KA was there to help, giving instructions, recommending translation services, and giving directions.
I’ve never heard good things about the dorms offered by KA, supposedly they are on the other side of the city, small, cramped, dirty, and so on. I never had the opportunity to confirm this myself, as I decided to rent a small apartment instead. Coming from Chicago, I have to say that the rent prices are quite reasonable, although not fantastic. Since Krakow has several universities, and is a major tourist city, finding accommodations is quite easy.
The classes themselves were a mixed bag. Some courses, such as Economics and Political History, had absolutely excellent professors teaching. Their lectures were both informative and entertaining. Other classes seemed like a complete waste of time, with obviously frustrated professors, who wanted the class to just be over.
The class sizes were quite small, at least for the English language group. Given the small group numbers, the professors were almost always available to give some guidance. As long as someone attended the lectures, and showed initiative, grades could be easily brought up by a few points.
This is a private, for profit, university. This means that any time you want to re-take your finals, switch courses, or anything of that nature there will be a fee to pay. On the other hands, the fees are so small (10 to 30 dollars) that they are barely noticeable. As a matter of fact, one year of tuition at KA cost me around $1000 back in 2009, and I can’t imagine that the prices went up much since then. My friends back in the USA made fun of me, saying that they pay more for books that I do for tuition. As far as the cost of books, Poland seems to immune to the price gouging done by American book publishers, and KA makes sure to choose quality material that won’t break your budget. Copyright laws are enforced loosely, and if you don’t want to pay the already low price required to purchase the necessary books, just make photocopies, no one at KA will mind.
Overall I was quite satisfied at the value in education I received for my money. An actual university, for community college prices.

    Overall Score: (3.45/5.00)
