71 Student Reviews of Miami-Jacobs Career College : Columbus

  • I am a former employee with MJCC at the Columbus Campus. Having been on the “inside looking out” I have no hesitation in encouraging individuals to stay away from this school. I’m not sure there are any campuses still operating – if there are, they should not be.

When I started with MJCC I had such high hopes for all the students that I would be working with. It did not take long for those hopes to be dashed. In my position as Director of Career Services I was charged with “placing grads in positions within their field.” Well, that makes sense, right? What I was not told, was that I would be working with students with a felony who were studying in fields where they had ZERO chance of working due to the felony. Paralegal? Surgical Technician? Medical or Dental Assistant? Criminal Justice? Really???

I was most certainly not opposed to helping these folks – they deserved a second chance. However, they were set up to fail from the beginning. It was impossible to get these students in for an interview, because they could not pass a background check. IMPOSSIBLE. However I was charged with reaching ridiculous placement numbers and a background felony did not come into play with that expectation.

We had students that were unable to pass courses for their Associate’s Degree – they should have been discharged for their own good. These folks were not going to find work in their field, every $$ they paid went down the drain. But, oh no, good old MJCC decided to “downgrade” these students to a certificate program. Keep the money coming in, convince these students that they will still end up with a good paying job. In other words – LIE, LIE, LIE!!

I just reviewed the Columbus MJCC Catalog and was not surprised that I recognized not one name on the list of administrators. That’s how it goes within that school. Hire professionals into positions that are impossible to fulfill, be untruthful with potential students’ futures, promise clinicals and internships that will never come to pass, fire those employees (that door revolves constantly – the students never have an opportunity to forge a relationship with those professionals because the “good” ones leave to go to a job they can be proud of), the list goes on and on.

Please go to your community colleges and stay far far away from these for profit “schools”. You will pay a fraction of the cost and graduate with a degree that stands for something. (You will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to find a good job.)

  • sadly I disregarded statements that is about miami jacobs because there will always be a reason for someone to talk bad about something. This school is pathetic and a complete joke. Their staff is so rude, they don’t do their jobs, they only care about how much money they get out of you. The only staff member that I can speak highly of is Mr.Hirn the law professor. Hes the only person in that whole entire school that gives a damn about his students. This school will tell you anything they can think of so you will sign up. They took away printers, extra activities, will try and pull anything they can to get money out of you. It’s really sad and pathetic. it’s no wonder why they can’t keep students or staff members. I would give 0 stars for all categories but it wouldn’t let me. Please take the comments of others into consideration before wasting money like I did.

  • Well what can I say? This school is a complete joke. Unfortunately I am a current student at Miami Jacobs in Troy Ohio. Im enrolled in the automotive program. Where should I begin. First off let me start off by saying, I’m 32 and used to be a production supervisor till I lost my job and realized that getting a degree was the only way I would ever be able to provide for my family. I had the choice between Sinclair and this dump they try to call a college, and boy did I make the wrong decision. The first two classes I was required to take were a complete joke! One was pretty much a refresher course in everything I was taught in bible school about being nice to people and feeling good about yourself. Im not joking. The other one basically consisted of learning how to turn on a computer, and listening to a few disruptive kids talking over the instructor about there life experiences. At one point one of these kids literally told the instructor that he would turn in his assignment (which was the only one for the whole quarter) when he wanted too. Not when it was due!! This apparently was ok with the instructor since it was accepted and given an A. Now these two classes cost well over 2k. I told myself that once I started my automotive classes it would get better, well I didnt. Since I have started I dont think I have learned anything except for how much the head of the automotive program loves himself and I’ve watched my other instructors fix things on there own cars, but as far as hands on experience. …hardly. For example. Today I worked a 9 hour shift and rushed to class. I dont know why I was shocked when are lab time consisted of us watching are instructor rotate his tires and then we were told to sit in on another class which by the way was a refresher course that dealerships send there experienced technicians to just to keep them up to date. Which just to let you know is not even taught by a miami jacobs instructor. After my instructor nooded off I decided to leave. As I was leaving my instructor asked me to come back in to our own class room. When I did he spent literally 5 min trying to log into his computer the he said and I quote, “Well this days pretty much shot, so just hang out till its time for you to go” Are you kidding me?? Unfortunately this has been the norm since I’ve started, but see what happens if you dont show up. I can guarantee you’ll hear about it, and how important it is that you are there. Really? Give me a break. I think I’ll be better off just cutting my loses and starting over at Sinclair because they wont touch any of my credits anyway. Stay Away

  • I have submitted my resume, etc. to the Career Services office at the Dayton campus since that is where I graduated from. They have done nothing at all to help me get a job in my program/career by sending my resume out to potential employers. It used to be that before Miami-Jacobs was bought by Delta that things were better. The education was better, the instructors were better, and everything else was better.

  • This post may offend some, especially those who attend this elementary, I mean high school, no I mean “college”.. How is this school is even still standing is beyond me. Their name has been dragged through the dirt. No place of employment/company/hospital wants to partner up to offer internships. Don’t believe me? Well since you will never get homework at MJCC or a teacher for that matter that shows up, here’s an homework assignment from me. Promise, if you go to MJCC, this will be the only one you will get.

Ask a any PROFESSIONAL, not your friend, or your cousin, or baby mama, and in the same situation as you. But a REAL professional at one of those companies you want to work for. Ask them what they think of MJCC. **Red Flag #1: How are you going to get a better job if companies do not even respect your college. From my OWN research and various legitimate sources (off the record) has have even came out and expressed they would NOT even hire any grads from that school. One hiring manager even went as far to say it was a school of rejects (people that could NOT get in real colleges). The enrollment process is non-existence they take anyone with a heartbeat and a FREE FASA form.

Over half of their Health Programs are NOT CERTIFIED or ACCREDITED!!! State does not even recognize their program. Don’t take my word. DO your OWN research. The Dayton Nursing Program has been shut down for a while. Educate YOURSELF. Why go to a school and pay or get a school loan for $20,000+. Yes $20,000 to get a degree that NOT worth the paper it’s written on! And no one with hire you. Now you have debt you have to pay back. With that price tag, apply to University of Dayton, Wright State University, UC, The Ohio State University, Sinclair, just NOT MJCC. Don’t think, that you are going to just going to just transfer to one of these schools after you try to graduate from one of MJCC’s scam programs. WAKE UP!!! NO SCHOOL WILL TOUCH YOUR CREDITS!!!!! SAVE YOURSELF 2+ YEARS of YOUR LIFE. CALL ANY 4 YEAR COLLEGE AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THEY ARE NOT GOING TO TOUCH MJCC CREDITs. THEY know its a bullsh*t a$$ school

My teacher was a freelance ddesigner who quit due to bad staff and payment arrangements.we were without an instructor or materials s so I left only to be fully charged for everything . • I am a recent grad of the Sharonville MJCC campus and am also currently and happily working in a hospital. My experience at MJCC was a roller coaster to say the least. In my time there, I saw several changes in administrative staff and had several different teachers come and go as well. Accreditation of the ST program was a huge issue, too, because our campus was still waiting on it to be a valid program. The continuity in personnel was nonexistent. Then, about a year ago some new people were brought on board to help get things straightened up. Susan Stetzer (Instructor) and Darrell Brand (Clinical Coordinator) were hired and things began looking up. Susan was a wealth of invaluable knowledge and believe it or not, she genuinely cared for us jaded students. Our morale was pitiful, but she gave it life! Several of us wouldn’t have made it through without her. Now, the program is rapidly becoming successful. Accreditation was awarded in October, clinical sites are accepting more MJCC students thanks to Darrell’s persistence, and they keep working very hard to solidly back up the growing reputation of success of Sharonville’s MJCC campus, it’s students, and most importantly it’s graduates. There were times I never thought I’d hear myself say this, but thanks!

  • I worked there for 2 years, worst mistake of my life and I can’t get those years back. There is a revolving door for management and instructors, seen 5 management changes in a year and all more worthless than the one before. The president was eventually canned, which is good because she made all of the decisions in everything, no one dared make a decision without it being her idea. She micro-managed to a level I have never seen before. All she lived for was to reveal the one rock we left unturned, and make us feel stupid for it. It became so bad that if she was sick or in a meeting, no one could do anything! Too afraid and to scared. I saw 8 people escorted to their cars with a pink slip in less than a year and a half. The students signed their life away with no chance of paying it back, and they laughed all the way to the bank. As an employee, if you wouldn’t or couldn’t give your entire life to the college, you got canned, no appretiation of family or personal time needs. Very anti-family. One manager always cried to me about her son but couldn’t figure out that she sacrificed her family for her career and couldn’t figure out why he was the way he was, pathetic! DON’T ENROLL

Sorry I went on about Batterson but man he hard to ignore or get past.First time I met him (in class) I did not come back the next day, he was a rude as the day is long. He ruined it for lot of people in my class anyway. He was the program director and the teacher. I was very upset to find out the school was having a hard time finding sites due to 1. no respect for the cirriculum 2. students showing up late for clinicals 3.talking on cell phones at clinicals 4. cussing at staff at hospitals….really??? No wonder hospitals won’t take MJCC for clinicals. Call around, I’m not making it up, first I heard this from teachers, then from reputation….bad bad bad

  • I went to Miami Jacobs, so excited to go get an education, wanted Res Ther but it was full, so went to Surg Tech, Michael Batterson, program director was the Surg Tech teacher, what a freaking ashole he was, he talked about himself and his past as a Police Officer and then his personal experiences as a Surg Tech the first day it was amazing. He loves his own arrogant mean self. The only other thing he spoke about is how he would fail a person who did not commit to the program although it seemed like the program was about him and his experiences. He could be late as he was many times but if a student was UH OH..warning in a demeaning way, He warned all the students about not going aginst a Surgeon because they all think they are God and they might STAB you with an instrument. NO JOKE….Then we went into this book he says was outdated and if you could not keep up with is fast ramblings, you were screwed…He was not nice, always rude and pointed, even with faults of his own, he did not tolerate interuptions, although, if he were interupted ( I know I am spelling that wrong, forgive me) he lost his place because, like many of us, it’s hard to get back on track. He is racial and rude and I pray his wife , if he is lucky enough to have one, is stronger than him and beats his ass down or has learned to ignore him. Impossible to resolve conflict or any kind of problem with. Many of my fellow students sent complaints to the office about him BUT he was THE GOD of MJCC so who cares. It’s like high school. ridiculous considering we all have to pay what seems like a million dollars to go to this ridiculous school. My experience is HORRIBLE, I have to pay 20 or more thousand dollars to this place, I quit 2 jobs for and went to less hours and less pay for and didnt even finish. I had 4 classes and clinicals to go,did great in my medical classes but wasn’t doing so good in the English II class, due to changing jobs and trying to get this right, went to my Financial Advisor and the Assistant Dean about it, they both told me (after looking at my records) if I was willing to take an F in this class and redo it, I could start school again Tuesday and I would be fine. Although thats not what I wanted, I chose to take the option, only to get a call the following Monday, saying “oops, we made a mistake, you have to give us 2100$ or you can’t come back”…..Well to my surprise, that is true. Thanks for the great advice. This is during the time they were losing accredidation for the nursing program and then respiratory therapy…needless to say they ruined my life, THANK YOU FOR NOTHING…I had already heard there was no respect for the school at most hospitals already which was not good for me to hear…YUCK….Michael Batterson was my first really bad experience there and for anyone who thinks he is cool, well, is there anyone????
I do have to say I had a couple of teachers who changed my life (as all should, you are lucky to have or have had them) My Microbiology teacher LOVE her, My Med Term teacher AWESOME, MY A&P teacher Love that guy, want to drink with him, and My Pharm teach you were lucky to have them OH I forgot, My Algebra teach that plays the bass, he really wanted to make a differnce but I’m sure you took that away….shame on you MJCC for taking so much from so little…hope yourmoney makes you happy and if I ever see M B on the street I’m sure I’ll say thank you to him as well…Thanks for a giant bill and credits that transfer nowhere cuz all hospitals and schools KNOW YOU SUCK!! and will not recognize your crap…VERY UPSET X STUDENT BTW, I only left ratings cuz i had to

I should be finishing up my 1st six weeks of clinicals and getting ready to start my last six weeks…which means I would be completely finished with school… but here I sit, waiting, time dragging on! I don\’t know what is going on, but the school should have had sites for us to go to upon completion of the Capstone/Review course. Kind of scary, huh?! Now, there are more students to be placed with nowhere to go. There are even people ahead of me, that are still waiting. Not real promising… Please be aware that everything that you have read above is absoutely true in regards to the school. I feel that I have wasted 2 years of my life, money and time and will forever be in debt. Please do not attend this school! My first class was not bad but soon to find out too late that these people had no idea what they were doing. Classes were a joke and so was the instructors. I too jumped into this so called college because I was on a long waiting list at other schools and couldn’t wait. Shame on me for not investigating. Classes consist of socializing only. Instructors given books and not knowing the material to teach. It was terrible, and if you try to transfer to another college good luck credits won’t tranfer. Please STUDENTS BEWARE check this school out before signing anything. Respiratory Dept sucked not even recognised as a credited school by the NBRC. What a waste of my life. • MJCC is a joke to me. I use to really like the school until I found out what it is really about, “THEIR MONEY ONLY”. They act very professional and nice before a individual becomes a student of theirs, after that you are on your own to figure out everything by yourself. Do not bother even asking questions or getting help because they do not care about their students concerns, questions, or success you will get run around answers that will leave you to feel more confused than before asking and trying to get help. I am currently apart of the Criminal Justice program down at MJCC about to graduate, if I had to make the choice to go back to MJCC I would never do it again. Infact I would never started in the Criminal Justice program. There a very few staff down their that actually do genuinly care for the students quality of education and their success I can name a few staff members that I think were great instructors, Ms. Carpenter, Mr. Wadsworth, Ms. Williams, and Ms. Jones. I really did get something out of the classes with these individuals and enjoyed their classes….but for the rest of the classes and instructors I had,I did not get much out of them or the courses they taught. Some of the staff instructors I have had classes with seem very unprofessional, and bringing subjects up that have nothing absolutly to do with the course outline, which I find appauling. I find it completely unprofessional for students and instructors to be talking outside school settings or school hours. For the most part I did have a good experience at this school probably for the first year and five months, but its seems the longer I stayed down there as a student, the communication began to suck. I started abserving some unprofessionalism behavior exhibited by some staff members, which I find completely appauling not to mention really unethical. Some of things I have heard through other people about some staff and found it out to be true, makes me completely disgusted and ashamed i ever looked at them as a professional. Therefore I am ashamed to have been apart of an organization that hires in unprofessional people into their organization, which makes me question what their true purpose was for being at MJCC in the first place. I hate how this school operates and manages things. I feel this school is very dishonest with their students most of the time, and will be honest very rarely when it benefits them. I am happy I am almost done with this School, and I have never felt more miserable in my life, than I have been, these last two years while attending there. I feel I have wasted my time, money and life. If I had any advice for anyone wanting to attend this school, do your research and check other school options before going to MJCC, and anyone who is about to graduate or has already graduated good luck with your careers, job searches, and employment status.

The program directors could care less about as well as the rest of the staff….The instructors are not qualified to teach and the only reason they are teaching at MJCC is because no respecting professor would be caught teaching at this crap school. You don’t learn anything in you classes especially if you have a lazy teacher or program director, which I did. I had 3 weeks left and I needed a new extern site and my program director never called me back and made me fail and the school said I would have to pay 3500$ if I wanted to retake extern and I would have to start all over because none of my hours I had worked counted. You are just a paycheck to them. The career services people are the best at never being able to find a relevant job for your field!!!! and they feed you lines of crap that will ensure you will loose every position you are applying for. The dean has no idea what’s going on with anything and never has an answer to anything you ask him. Financial seems to think they can do whatever they want with your money. We were overcharged 800$ for out laptops and instead of giving us our money back, they kept it to “pay off any debt owed to the school.” I took out student loans why should I have any debt to them? The laptops were also engraved with the MJCC logo on the front which we were charged for but not asked if we wanted it on there. Half the books we were issued we never once opened but we could not return. One teacher didn’t feel the need to teach us everything we needed to know in A&P 1 so when we took the second one, we had to cram 2 classes into one just to be caught up. I am in the vet tech program in Troy and they are still working out all the kinks in the curriculum so we are basically paying them 36000$ to be guinea pigs. The microbiology classes also inclused parasitology and Hematology which are all 3 separate classes anywhere else. We are expected to take all 3 in one class in 6 weeks. I am very upset I took out 12,000 in loans for the first 6 months and it was a waste of my time and money.

  • I have read each review about this sub-standard so-called college. The school was the most unethical, prejudice, money pitt, that I have ever encountered in my life. I worked my butt off to find students clinical sites to attend because the entire region from Columbus to Cincinnati had a horrible opinion of the quality of graduates. For example, I taught a class, the book for the class was on back order for the entire term of the class. When I complained to Faith Mitchell, I was told to create my own lecture outline. I witnessed students being treated unjust, repeatedly. One student may have disappeared from class for a week, once he/she returned, a message would be relayed to that person that they were withdrawn. Yet another student may do the identical same offense a few months later and would be permitted to continue. There was NO consistency in decision making from Faith Mitchell, Jennifer Yarnell, Christine Dolsand and I was personally harrassed by a Program Director, Mike Batterson. I expressed my fear of him especially when he would drive me to his house to let his dogs out. It made me feel very unconfortable but Faith and Christine Dolsand did not care. I believe they thought I was making it all up. They did not care when he grabbed a student by the collar and threw him up against the wall, either. Mike Batterson was a want-to-be cop. Are they running a jail or a college. The problems DO NOT lie within one program. All programs are effected by the poorly structured, half-witted Directors, that clock in to a fashion show rather than devote time and attention to making a difference in lives. I have never seen so many people act like brain washed robots as those employed by this joke of a college. Common sense would have to tell them that they are performing their jobs inappropriately. The Directors and Campus Director are driven by high salaries, period, and to hell with what is morally right. I not only PLEAD to potential students to seek other educational options but I PLEAD that you think twice before working for any MJCC. I was employed at the Dayton, Ohio campus.

Then, yesterday, I get a notice from a collections agency for over $8,000!!!!! I personally know of several instructors that were not qualified to teach classes, and the administration of MJ knew they were not qualified to teach the classes, but they taught the classes anyway. The administration of MJ will just tell students whatever the student wants to hear to get them to calm down and feel better. And all it is, is a bunch of BS, because they will tell the next student the complete opposite.

WHAT TONYA DOESN’T TELL YOU ABOUT HOW THEY ACHIEVED SUCH A HIGH PLACEMENT RATE IS THE FACT THAT THEY HIRE THEIR OWN STUDENTS AT THE SERENITY DAY SPA AND SALONS THAT THE COLLEGE RUNS, WHICH IS THE ONLY WAY THEY GET THAT HIGH OF A NUMBER. They teach from books that we don’t have your lucky to keep the same instructor for a class. They do have ATI which is good though they don’t teach from it and they answers are completely different from what our other books say. Now right before my 3rd Quarter started they said i have to pass ATI with a level 2 and if i fail i have to repeat the quarter even if i have an A in that class. I didn’t sign up for that to be a part of my curricum and for it to take effect on me in my third quarter isn’t right. The reason we have to pass with a level two now is cause there numbers are low on students sitting for the N-CLEX. If you don’t do good then they say pretty much your not studying and its all your fault when i know i study cause i want to be a nurse. They just set you up for failure all the way around. Maybe if they weren’t so greedy and get the dollars signs out of there heads they would teach us. Even if i do graudate from this program i don’t know if i would work as a nurse or go to another school cause i feel like i haven’t really learned anything. We were constantly losing or being switched on Instructors. I didn’t really do my research on other schools, I, like alot of other students, was in a hurry to get into a program. Ms. Jean is pretty interesting and Ms. Hasseman takes some definite getting used to, but you can’t make the Curriculum into what it isn’t. There can be alot of blatant abuse between the Nursing Students, which the instructors do nothing to quell. I’m talking about full grown women hurling insults across the classroom everytime someone who isn’t in their clique asks a question. It’s like High School, but worse. It’s like it in all the Nursing Classes, but it’s glossed over to new students. “We have our issues, but we’re a family now.” No, they teach you that Nurses eat their own and that’s what everyone seems to live by there. It’s encouraged. Even the “Best Friends” of girls all snipe each other with horrible gossip when separated. It’s awful and uncomfortable. The motto of the School seems to be, “But you dont really need to know that,” or “But we dont have time to go over that.” Pharmacology consists of Outlining a HUGE book that is already an outline. People do it on auto pilot to just get it done, because even a quarter isn’t long enough to do it properly. I understand having alot of homework in an accelerated course, but doing workbooks of word searches and fill in the blanks, outlining outlines just so the Teacher feels like she’s given you enough to do and getting berated because your teacher is using a different text book than you, but doesnt want to allow you to take notes is frustrating. The whole class has to share what bits and pieces they got just to get notes together that make sense. On top of it, there’s been several times when our teacher is late or stepped out for an hour or two. But she wont hesistate to lock you out for being 2 minutes late. I wouldn’t reccommend this program. I’m lucky to have the time to do the stupid amounts of busy work, granted, I’d like to actually be LEARNING something from my homework, but if I had a young family, I would say, don’t bother. Actually, I say don’t bother with MJCC anyway. Like the others said, you’re just a Dollar Sign. They’re talking about starting an LPN to RN program, but they won’t be getting any more of my Money. I’ll be going somewhere else for my RN. They aren’t training Nurses, they’re training pill-passing Aides, and that scares the hell out of me.

  • Miami-jacobs came wrapped up in such a neat little package. It was presented to me on a silver plate adorned with promises. None of them have been fulfilled. I am only in my 2nd session as an LPN student and I have been fed up since day 1.

They have switched our instructors around at least 5 times.

They put too many people in our class (15) to begin with, so they had to send half of the students to do their clinicals and labs at a different campus because they wanted to sell those seats.

The classes are impossible to fail. For some reason “I didn’t feel like doing it” is an acceptable excuse for not turning in homework.

They don’t want anyone to quit the program or to be removed from it, so they are constantly making exceptions for absences and tardies.

Our class was assigned to do a presentation for a group of potential students, eating up the lab time we had on our last day before clinicals so we could persuade new money to come into the school. This consisted of making posters with marker like kindergartners.

All in all, they really do treat you like 3rd graders. I’m not sure what kind of knowledge I’m going to be equipped with, or who would hire me once I get out. All I know is that I’m trying to self teach as much as I can and crossing my fingers that it will be enough.

They have recently changed the classes from a full 12 week quarter to two six-week block classes. This does not work well with a steno class. Essentially, if you do not pass your speed test, you fail. All the other required work does not factor into your grade, so it is pointless to do any of it until after you pass a speed test. As anyone in court reporting knows, you can be very close to passing a speed test and because of the way they are graded, you can fail with a 94%. I am a student at Miami Jacobs, 3rd quarter. I would consider another college if I were you. Tuition is in excess of $20,000. In my opinion the quality of instructors (poor), curriculum (poor) and clinicals (poor). I realized this shortly after I began, but I could not wait for an opening at another school. I had become unemployed and wanted to complete a LPN program before my unemployment ran out. None of my credits would transfer to another school so I’m stuck. I hope I get enough from the program to pass n-clex, I am pulling straight A’s but I have a feeling I will need more than that. The school does use ATI which I feel will help me get through the N-clex. Here’s an example of how one of my classes went:
    Nutrition 1.75 hours 1 day a week:
Week 1 – instructor went over expectations for the quarter.
Week 2- no class the instructor forgot we had a class.
    Week 3-Watched Super Size me.
Week 4- Watched the 2nd part of Super Size me. Instructor handed out a cross word puzzle.
Week 5- Instructor collected the cross word puzzle, skimmed over a few chapters, handed out another cross word puzzle.
Week 6- Changed instructors we sat like 3rd graders, each reading a paragraph form a chapter, collected crossword puzzle. Assigned a case study.
Week 7- Sat like 3rd graders, again reading a paragraph from a chapter. Instructor walked by to see if we did our homework, assigned another case study, told us what the final would cover.
Week 8- Took an ATI assement.
    Week 9- Took final
This class cost me over a thousand dollars. I learned nothing new, but got an A. The clinicals have all been at Nursing Homes, I think we will get 1 day at an OB office, A Peds office, and I’m not sure what they will do for the MRDD rotation. As far as IV therapy we have to have 1 successful stick, and that can be in a dummy arm. But that combined with the class you take is enough to get your IV certification.
PLEASE THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE STARTING THEIR PROGRAM, THEY ARE ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!
