The USF campus in the Bradenton/Sarasota area is a great compliment to their main campus. It is very conveniently located near the SRQ Airport in the college area of Manatee/Sarasota county. USF Sarasota neighbors other schools such as the State College of Florida, New College of Florida, and even the world famous Ringling College of Art and Design. The location in Central Florida is a great place for college students with multiple beaches nearby, a cultured city area, and plenty of Sarasota history nearby to uncover.
The campus itself is a very attractive campus with many places to hang out and study. There is a nice courtyard, plenty of benches and picnic tables, and plenty trees to sit under and read. There is also beach access nearby for a change of scenery. The classrooms are of a good size, without the overwhelming aspect of too many students vs teachers. All of the classes I attended had around 20 students and I never felt like I missed out on anything due to the class size.
The professors themselves are some of the best in the area. I was impressed with every one of the professors; from English professors to Accounting to Business and Marketing. The overall staffing of the campus is great. From the administration and financial aid offices to cafeteria and custodial personnel. There have been very few incidents on the campus and nothing was ever too extreme as far as fights, riots and other things go.
The cost of tuition is not as cheap as you could get down the road at State College of Florida, but the overall level of education is worth the extra money. However I did have to work full time to help afford the costs of tuition.
There are many places to stay near the campus from Bradenton to Sarasota. Within a 2 mile radius if the campus there are dozens of apartment and condo complexes, many neighborhood with rental houses, and many more choices the further out you go. There are plenty of places to eat right around the campus from fast food, to fine dining. One of my favorite things was the amount of sushi places near the campus. The night life in the area is pretty good for an older community. Downtown Sarasota has plenty of bars to hang out in, whether you are looking for a dive, a pub, or one of those loud clubs where everybody has glow sticks and glitter. Plus you are only about 10 minutes away from Siesta Key Village and Siesta Beach. The night life on the Key is great and filled with island type bars and restaurants. Great places like Gilligan’s Island Bar or Daiquiri Deck are a must if you live in the area.
The campus is smaller than USF Tampa and it supports a fewer amount of classes and degrees. A lot of the students come straight over from State College of Florida with their AA looking to finish a degree. You run into a lot of older people because of that. I can’t tell you how many times in my first semester did I ask an older student for directions or information thinking they worked on the campus.
Overall I would say the Bradenton/Sarasota USF is a great college and can give you that real college experience you may want. Even if you don’t like the school, the location should be enough to make you want to go. Go Bulls!
