35 Student Reviews of Stenberg College (Surrey)

  • Stenberg College is a money-maker. They do not care about their students. They price their programs high, babysit you through admissions, and don’t care if you fail (anything under 70%) because you will owe them your tuition anyways. Though they do have industry connections, they have a bad reputation because their programs aren’t that great. You are a commodity to them, please find a better place to complete your education!

    Overall Score: (1.09/5.00)
  • DO NOT ATTEND THIS COLLEGE! This college lacks professionalism and credibility at ALL LEVELS. Most of their instructors are not qualified as they do not have any experience in teaching or a degree in education. Anyone who is practicing in the field can be called “instructor” and they only teach you the things based on what they know but many times they are inaccurate. Exams and assignments often go missing and they will not take any responsibility of it. Stenberg College has a bad reputation out there and many places will not hire students from this college because of its reputation. Think twice if you plan on going to this school.

  • I finished my nursing unit clerk program early 2016. The course is pretty fast paced and you need to make sure you complete your assignment s and readings. It’s very easy to fall behind. I was fortunate enough to have instructors who actually cared about their students passing and felt very well prepared for exams. When it came to practicum I was placed with a crazy unit clerk, I made it very clear to the school that they need to find me a placement elsewhere which luckily they were able to so I was happy about that. The thing I had an issue with was the admin team at the college they were not very helpful, and not very prompt in resolving student complaints when it came to one of their coworkers, it’s more like they all have each other’s backs which if fine, but not very professional when it comes to handling students feedback. I would say if you can handle a fast paced course where you are willing to out in the work this college may be for you, but if you are looking for a college to support you when you have an issue with on of their staff members you won’t get that support.overall, I felt about 70% prepared for practicum, as we aren’t taught the daily tasks I feel that you would do on a unit. It’s an average college.

  • This school, where should I begin, first of all DO NOT GO HERE, PLEASE LOOK AT THESE REVIEWS BEFORE COMMING HERE. This school is the worst when it comes to education. They do NOT help you reach your goals, they basically sign you up then set you up for failure. This school has a POLICY, that policy is IF YOU DONT PASS YOUR TESTS WITH 70% they WILL KICK YOU OUT, then put you on a waitlist… make you pay money to RE-ENTER, and then if yoru lucky enough to finish your program you will. The staff does not help you with anything. They’re nice at first and then basically forget youra student and treat you more like an a person to make money from. Please save your money, student loans etc.. they are not worth your money. They will scam you. ITS RIDICULOUS. THEY ARE THE WORST, their eduacation team sucks, the teachers dont help u at all… theyre more focused on screwing you over before helping you. Just read these reviews their all true…… SAVE UR MONEY AND GO TO A PUBLIC SCHOOOL.

  • Let me dispel all the myths that are circulating about this institution, because it frustrates me when I read comments from people that are obviously just upset about being dismissed and are lashing out. Honestly, there are some things that this college does well and a number of things that it does extremely poorly (although this is only speaking from my experience in the RDPN program).
First, let’s note the positive aspects of the program.
1)Upon completion of the RDPN program you will get a diploma and the ability to take the RPN licensing exam which will enable you to work as an RPN (if you pass). 2) There are a number of teachers who are very caring, who desire to teach their curriculum in as interesting a way as possible, and who genuinely care that you comprehend the material. 3) Nearly every “clinical instructor” that I had was excellent and cared about ensuring we become competent psychiatric nurses. They worked very hard to ensure good relationships with their clinical sites. 4) It’s online – so if you excel at that kind of learning environment you will enjoy it (I didn’t and would have rather had in class learning but still managed to excel). 5) Most of my fellow classmates were awesome. 6) The program is accelerated and you get to work a year sooner than other programs. 7) Unlimited gauze and wound care kits for you. 8) As with most relationships, once the instructors trusted your skills they would relax and work with you, allowing for reasonable things such as extensions, extra credit, or time off. 8) At some point beyond the half way point, you just stop caring about the daily postings – because you have mastered APA and realize that some instructors may not even be reading your posts – which leads to some very humorous posts.
All those good aspects notwithstanding, there were a number of negative components to the program, often in direct relation to the positive aspects.
1)The program alone did not feel sufficient to allow me to pass the entrance exam. There was a lot of extra work that needed to be put in as it felt that there were large gaps in what was being taught and what was sufficient to practice. 2) There was no correspondence by instructors in the course that was designed to prepare students for the exam and there was only one practice exam for the entrance exam in one of the final active courses. The main complaint with the practice exams provided were that they seemed to be very outdated and many students voiced that they felt that the exam seemed more designed to prove to students that they were not ready to take the exam, rather than to help them learn and focus on weak areas. 3) The program was “culled” (I’m not sure what other word to use other than that)(also psychiatric nursing program typically have a large drop-out rate). We lost at least half of the students in the program from start to finish – for a variety of reasons. Most students were kicked out of the program for a variety of academic reasons and many of them reported that they felt the process happened very quickly, with little communication on the part of the college, and that there was very little opportunity to argue their cases. 4) Some instructors were frustrating to have, both in online personality and in course delivery methods. 5) Some of the courses felt pointless and could have been replaced with much more vital courses that could have benefitted the skill set of the psychiatric nurse (ex: There was really only one course that taught therapeutic communication skills and one course that taught pharmacology – some courses should be removed to allow for those courses to be taught throughout multiple semesters. 6) The program is accelerated and online so it is very easy to get left behind and scrape your way through until a later semester only to find you are unprepared for your duties. 7) It is a private college and it is so very very expensive. They send you small gifts every once in a while but for 40 000 dollars they should have been custom engraved and filled with gold. 8) The college seems to often be in a state of staffing-change, which does not breed confidence. As a result (or perhaps due to other aspects) the college’s communication could only be described as poor. Students often complained of not being aware of policies until it was too late and they were in the process of being removed from the program. 9) They will remove you from the program for many reasons and the process will be quick. 10) They continually advertise the program as being online and allowing for flexibility, however this is only somewhat true as you are penalized for posting late and expected to post at the beginning of the week. They often stated that if posting early was a problem that students could choose to work ahead a week or two so it allowed them to post when needed, however this was rarely possible as most instructors would not open the coursework for the week until the beginning of the week. 11) Their slogan is “I changed me” and in this program that was definitely true. Unfortunately that will require you going above and beyond what is being taught in order to ensure you become competent.
Ultimately, the tldr version is this : If you have 40 000 dollars sitting around, want to work in 2 years instead of 3, are a motivated learner (aka: you don’t have a history of slacking, cheating, or making excuses on a continual basis) who likes online learning, and for whatever reason you are not choosing Douglas college’s psych nursing program, this program may be right for you. It is a lot of work and you will be doing a lot of it on your own, however, at the end of two years, if you haven’t been culled, you will have your diploma.

  • I have never been more disgusted by the way and school operates than I am with Stenberg college. I oringally enrolled for the LPN program. At the time of enrollment I was asked to put down a $500 deposit, at which point I had asked about refund policy as I had concerns getting funding. I was told it was refundable. When I applied for loans the school didn’t even fill out their portion of the application as it had “gotten lost” in their emails I called 2 months later to remind them. I had then been declined for loans, during my appeal process I was told by the financial aid advisor to lie on the forms to help me get more funding.
In the end I did not get funding and have now spent the last month trying to get this $500 refundable deposit back as I had to withdraw. I have been spoken down to, told to review my “contract” which says nothing about a deposit and my request to speak to the head of the school has been denied multiple times.
DO NOT GO HERE!!! The staff do not help you nor do they care as long as they get paid at the end of the day!!!

  • Look elsewhere. My interactions with Christine (RPN) advisor was not a pleasant experience. Sent emails with questions and after almost a week with no response I sent the email again, and her reply: ” We are very busy, we will respond when its your turn”. Not apologetic at all. Rude and dismissive. After that I got a bad feeling about whether I should shell out 40K on a course when the staff acts like this. This is a “for profit” organization and their costumer service levels should be at least good.
After reading these reviews I am not going to enroll. Douglas College has a great staff support willing to really help you and answer all your questions.

At first they seem so welcoming and helpful, always constantly calling you until you dont go in for a visit about your interest in the program. I was enrolled in a program here but did not want to complete or finsh it. The staff is rude, cant even make a single 5 cent photocopy for a student, the advisors arent help after you have payed and signed up. Lisa the school cordinator wants you out of there faster then you walked in. They dont strive or help you sucseed they just want your money. If they wanted to help you better they would not have the stupid policy they do. Stenberg is a not a good place to attend for your education, they will cut it short. the only reason why majority of their students get hired on practicum is because the class sizes drop from 30 to maybe 15. Also, the teachers wont help you pass you can be a letter off and they will mark it wrong even they know that yur understanding is correct. They look for mistakes. Also the career advisor nina is very rude, and dosent help you with the knowledge you need. she basically sits on her phone or says she has more importent things to do. Anyways students find yourselfs a better education, stay far away from stenberg do not go there, please save your money.

  • I was interested in the Mental Health/Addictions Counsellor gig advertised in the 24 newspaper (my 1st mistake was looking for work in there). I e-mailed Stenberg from a Public Library account for info telling them I was a Canadian Forces member who was leaving the service after 17 years and looking for career re-training. I live 10 minutes away and had phone message from “Ellen” at Stenberg when I got home. An info-interview was promptly booked by “Ellen” with “Natasha” when I called back. Then I started reading the terrible reviews the next day. The first indicator that should have got my Bull-Sh*t sense tingling should have been the young, charismatic model-types shown on their website – not a stunted troll in the bunch. Everyone was so jolly looking – even the Staff! So I called them back after reading the crap reviews and asked about the cost of this program – the Stenberg Receptionist wouldn’t say – I had to talk to the person I had been in contact with. Then “Natasha” picks up and I ask about the fee for this 60 week course as money was a key factor in this adventure. $17,000 I was told. That’s well beyond what I was able to pay, says I – I was going on EI and the training was to be funded by EI and its way beyond the funding they provide. “$7,500” Natasha says (so she’s well in the know about funding limits). Other means are available, she then says – like Student Loans. Then I go into debt with no guaranteed job placement, not what I had planned on says I. “OK” she says – and hung up so fast the”OK” was partially cut off! How bloody rude (and not just because she had a heavy-accented Asian accent – but that might explain a lot) – I had planned on finishing the conversation about our upcoming interview. To say the least, doesn’t look like that interview is going to happen now. I should say I know it’s a private institution… and I was a Recruiter in the Armed forces so I know how these things roll. The Recruiters sugar-coat everything to hook you in – the reality of it all sinks in later – when it’s too late (any CF Recruiter should point you in the right direction when you’re not a candidate – not just hang up in your face). In Stenberg’s case after the cheque gets cashed. Being virtually f-ed off in a phone call saved me the bus ride out there and being f-ed off in person! The old saying “if it looks too good to be true” may apply here. All I can say to young hopefuls is: ask a lot of carefully pre-prepared questions (especially about refunds and job placement!). It’s not PPSEC anymore – this body used to ensure some kind of job placement as part of the deal. It’s been watered down somewhat so be careful before you fork over cash to these characters. Hope this helps you somewhat – good luck!

  • Save Your Money and Sanity and Don’t Go Here!

I was placed in this school by WCB after a work site injury made it so I couldn’t perform my job tasks at the time. At first Stenberg felt great as people say the recruiters are your best friend and once you start your course you are the enemy. The recruiter was literally an actress and while I won’t say which one she can be seen daily on a Canadian t.v. station.

As the course began the teacher seemed very welcoming as if the school would fully support each of us with their best effort so we all succeed and make the school look great as we flood the workplace. Very quickly that same teacher became very ignorant. She mentioned several times that because she already had her degree we were to respect her, but she need not respect us. She also said anybody under a Doctor is basically a slave and as she was a Doctor it should be easy to see where we were.

She was an immigrant from India which I had no problem with. What I did have a problem with was that we had many such immigrants in our class and she treated them like dirt. As I was doing very well in the class I had no problem trying to help these people with their issues as the teacher may be occupied. I was quickly told I was not allowed.

While I did well on tests the teacher would seemingly take spite marks off of them and when confronted I was literally told I could not ask questions and then she began humiliating me in front of the class. I went to the staff about her behavior and they dismissed my problems.

Soon the entire class was in an anxiety state because of this woman and again I went to the staff to no avail other than to be angrily dismissed this time and told “It’s just how she and her culture are.” It was unbelievable.

For different parts of our course (Hospital Support Specialist) we had a Caucasian teacher who although she was much nicer to students she was clearly unqualified for her position. She constantly misspelled or mispronounced words and would change how tests were marked to accommodate. She wasted a huge portion of class time discussing her children. When it came time for clinical testing she passed people who’s needles had huge air bubbles in them and we were told our practicing equipment simply wasn’t up to par.

As I said I was doing well in the course including getting only 1 question wrong on our A&P exam, yet I still felt I wasn’t learning all I needed to in order to safely work in a hospital. I addressed this with WCB and was told no matter how bad the school was I had to prepare myself for a job in the industry. I was told that most learning is done on the job and although I understand that to a point a hospital setting is where someone should go in already highly trained and as confident as possible.

Within a few months our class size was cut in half. People who failed tests were not properly prepared by the teachers nor were they given a chance to prepare themselves or do a proper re-write. At this point what was left of the class and I got together to talk. They were all in the same mental state as me and I asked for us all to go to the administration, but they were understandably afraid that if they were to do this they may be removed from the program without the return of their tuition and no job to show for it. I had nothing to lose in my eyes so I went to admin and without naming names stated all the problems and that I was not the only one seeing them. We were told to change for our teachers and accept how they work. I had had enough and at that point dropped the course.

Months after I left I was still getting calls from some of the ESL mothers in the class telling me of the problems and their fears and asking whether I could help. This school is the furthest thing from what modern education should be. It actually hurts to know people take such advantage of others trying to better themselves. I really hope to see this school publicly shut down and all their problems brought to light.

  • The teachers were great, the administration was not. They do not assist with finding a job even though they reassure they do, I would get “it’s a rough time for LPNs right now” and 0 information or resources to help me or other students find a job. They suggested we work as RCA’s. Staff are rude and dismissive to students. All they care about is getting your money. A student had cheated numerous times on tests, was caught but instead of being removed was just asked to pay more money to get back into the course. Terrible ethics. Again, the teacher’s were lovely and passionate.

  • I was treated very nicely and recruited by a seller basically who seemed very nice and concerned for my career goals. After I began the program, that person kinda disappeared and was replaced with instructors and admin people. None of which were really qualified to be teaching us. The “Canadian” people who taught us only seemed to have education as high as the degree we were trying to obtain ourselves. Although I could appreciate their experiences in a hospital setting, they were not qualified to be teachers and were actually very dismal at what they did. Most were young and happy for the chance to be any kind of leader and took it to their advantage by power tripping on the students who would be asking relevant questions.
If you have any concerns as an individual that may need attention to be able to make accommodations so that you could complete the course, don’t bother because Stenberg will just shove policy after policy down your throats and nothing will be done to accommodate you. This not only happened to myself, but to other individuals in my cohort as well.
The entire year Stenberg was cracking the whip about plagiarism from the students while they themselves gave us many photocopied books rather than actual texts they were from as well as making PDF copies of chapters in texts from a very expensive and good textbook of anatomy and physiology while they sent their students a very cheap and incomprehensible one that was not sufficient to learn about body systems.
Overall I’m very disappointed in this school and I feel robbed. If you want quality education, just go to the traditional schools. This one, although I have a good degree, was horrible. Be prepared to self teach if you do choose this school because they won’t help you with that.

It is true that the “teachers” are terrible-they are not real teachers-all of them are full time nurses who do not care- they are only there for the money. The curriculum is terrible, half the classes are not even related to nursing and they barely focus on the important stuff (Pharmacology-Anatomy etc). I spend a lot of time and money on self teaching, getting new books and trying to learn things I was not taught. For 20,000 a year I expected the highest level of academic excellence from a school-and I got practically nothing. The school itself is ran by egotistic nutjobs who should not work in any health care related organization, let alone governing a nursing program. There were some good teachers and instructors there but they were treated like crap by the school and fired-no joke. I do not understand how there is no such governing body that can oversee the wrongdoings of this school and take them out of business. I am glad I got my diploma and am working- but I completely want to dissociate myself from this school and forget I ever went there!

If you make a proper complaint they blame the student. They only care about money. They don’t care if you pass or fail. When you apply to the school they give you a tour and show you all the technology they offer, the teachers don’t know how to use it. The teachers pick favorites and its not marks based. I have been belittled infront of the class on multiple occasions by a teacher. I read these posts before I started school thinking that I am normally a good student with high marks, I assumed that these posts were from students who didn’t try hard and used the school as an excuse for their failure, but everything that is posted about this school is true. The only thing that I would say isn’t true is about Steve, Those things may have happened in the past, but he is generally one of the better teachers at the school, he does his best to make sure that everyone can do their best. He is the only teacher hired who is trained properlly as a teacher, he explains things so people can understand. All the other teachers just read powerpoints off the overhead, you could hire a 15year old to do that rather than pay rude nurses $50/hr to not properlly teach. The student services lady is only there to sell you out, if you have a valid complaint she turns it against you. She doesn’t help with anything, she says she’ll get back to you and never does. I know people who have tried to re-enter the program and she won’t help even though it is her job, they had to get the organization that regulates private colleges involved. If you don’t believe here what people are saying about this school, please look up lawsuits filed against the school before you pay double the price to get a 1/3 of the learning. I have actually had a teacher tell me that for lab days we need to learn the skills out of our textbook she is not there to teach us, she is only there so we can practice what we have learned from our textbook. We had students in our class training each other on how to do skills because she refused to show us. If anyone is thinking of going to stenberg because of the short wait lists, please go to a proper school, it is so much more worth it in the end, you will thank yourself. Also a lot of the students signed up for the school because of the location, and we just found out that they will be moving the school to location unknown, which screws a lot of the students over who chose it because it is close to transit. please please think again before thinking of going to this school

It suspended his teaching licence for four months, saying his actions while principal of White Rock Christian Academy were physically, emotionally and intellectually abusive.

Paras resigned from the White Rock school in 2004 and took a job as vice-principal at nearby Regent Christian Academy in Surrey. That school suspended him temporarily this month but said he will return to his post in January after his licence is reinstated.

Neither Regent principal Paul Johnson, nor the chair of the school’s board of directors, Marvin Hunt, would say whether Paras is being paid during his time away from the school. “That is a decision of the board — a private decision,” said Hunt, who is also a Surrey city councillor.

Johnson said he will have no qualms about welcoming Paras back to his job as vice-principal. “I’ve known Steve for 23 years as a colleague because his school was just down the road from our school,” he said. “We knew that he had an absolutely pristine record prior to this accusation.

“He has been a man of character, in my opinion,” Johnson added. “This was a one-off in 2002-03.”

Paras, who appeared before the college during a closed-door hearing last May, admitted his misconduct. The college says in its discipline decision that Paras “was employed as a principal when he failed to report his knowledge of a sexual assault of a 13-year-old student by an adult male to either the Ministry of Children and Family Development or the police.

“In addition, he suspended her as a form of discipline and detained and isolated the student in a confined space for an inappropriate period of time during the initial investigation.”

In the decision posted on its website, the college says his actions as principal had jeopardized the safety and educational progress of particular students and threatened the integrity of the school.

“His misconduct constituted emotional, physical and intellectual abuse, which would cause a loss of self-esteem in the students and a loss of trust in the school system by the public,” the decision says. Although the two schools are religious independent schools, they receive partial funding from the Education Ministry.

In addition to his poor handling of the sexual assault, Paras admitted to:

    – Making disrespectful and demeaning comments towards a student during religious studies.

    – Making inappropriate comments during a school assembly speech.

    – Violating the privacy of students by disclosing personal information to other students and parents.

    – Issuing an improper assignment concerning circumcision to students in his Religious Studies class.

The mother of the 13-year-old girl said she is troubled that the man responsible for the sexual assault was never brought to trial but is relieved Paras has finally been punished for his actions.

She said the school tried to hide the facts while punishing her daughter. The girl — now 20 — often wondered why she had bothered to report the sexual assault since nothing happened, said her mother, who The Vancouver Sun is not identifying to protect the identity of her daughter.

“I think it’s good to let her know she wasn’t the bad one … she was the victim.”

  • worse school to ever attend they do not care about their students. The only thing the education team cares about is how much money they have received and how much more they can get out of you.

  • recently began a program at here to later find out that one of the teachers has a umm “interesting” background, maybe they make the course so easy because they dont want ppl to complain until its to late to back out?

  • This college is bullshit. They like to give fancy names for their programs but when you step into practicum, people don’t have a clue what role you are in.

Never go to a for-profit private post secondary!!! It will be the biggest mistake of your life. The teachers don’t give a shit about your education and learning. It is always the same 2-3 teachers teaching the entire program and you are paying 10x more than regular government colleges/universities. If these private colleges are doing so well then why do they need to constantly promote and advertise their programs?

Don’t think of private colleges as an easy way out because not many places hire students from private colleges and you cannot transfer any credits to a well known college/university either. What a waste of my time and money.

If you want to succeed in life, go find a better well known institute that will give you the right training and teach you the real things you need to know.

  • took the nursing unit course, the course has a heavy failure rate, you can get marked wrong for little things such as not crossing the letter “T” or not putting a page number on a sheet, in the latter half of the course program you can only get 9 errors on a test, even though the test can range from 10 to 20 pages, they tell you it is out of 30 marks. heavy failure rate. of the students i kept in contact with less than 10 percent got jobs. I polled a previous course as well.

  • I was enrolled on the community support program last autumn. Big mistake. From the outset I was ridiculed by the tutors in front of my classmates for having a strong provincial UK accent. Furthermore, there was another student who presented as being mildly intellectually impaired. Instead of the tutor being respectful and showing concern for her leraning difficulties, she was often rude and impatient toward her. it was painful to watch.
As for the quality of the course, it was over simplistice and wouldnt have challenged anybody. I left after 6 weeks as I was disillusioned with the whole set up. I tried to get my fees of 10, 000 dollars refunded proportionate to the time I actually spent there. But, they refused point blank. I tried to get them to show some compassion and discretion by telling them that my wife and I were in poverty, partly due to her still being in the recovery process from having breast cancer ( chemo and a mastectomy). But they just laughed in my face and kept the money.

If you apply there, be especially wary of the grooming process, where you are praised to high heaven during the interview. This courting continues until you sign on the dotted line. Next thing you know, the red carpet is rapidly pulled from beneath your feet and you end up flat on your back with a sore bum and massive student loans to pay back, while stenberg laugh all the way to the bank………………STEER CLEAR AND GO TO A PUBLIC COLLEGE INSTEAD!
