13 Student Reviews of Union Institute & University : Cincinnati

  • I did well at Union. I ended up with my PhD teaching sociology at WVU Tech and now I am chairperson of the social science department. I thought the quality was excellent.

    Overall Score: (3.18/5.00)
  • Outstanding faculty and staff! They are always available for students and offer assistance time and time again. Rigorous program which is a gift to one’s learning. Highly recommended.

    Overall Score: (4.45/5.00)
  • My experience with Union is complicated because I had a 3rd party in my communication. At the time, the types of things that can occur electronically was not known.

And the subject matter that I went there to study couldn’t have been worked with in a traditional setting. The trouble that I had was with the local traditional system.

I do not believe Union was wild about my subject, but they didn’t close the door on it either. They taught me to think critically. And this is the point of Union though — it’s to be on the edge of a new subject, and out of the preconceived square. I have all the books that I wanted to read for each study that I crafted. I can’t say that about books that I had to buy to complete to get the required credits from the traditional setting. Those I got rid of because they were never valuable to me.

No one in my life had ever asked me what I wanted to know. Instead, they told me what I should know, and quizzed me on the correct answers. That is not teaching a person to think –it is programming a citizen.

I have an entirely different outlook on the world because I went to Union Institute and University. What price can we put on that?

Many of my fellow learners keep in contact on Facebook. All of them had great experiences in the ADP program. They graduated. I didn’t. But then it was always the learning that was the point of the endeavor. And learning is what really living is about according to John Dewey.

A friend of mine who is a leading researcher in the field of sexuality. He received his Ph.D from Union. I heard him present at Woodhulls Sexual Freedom Summit. He’s no fool. His work is cutting edge.

He’s also an associate professor at Bard University.

  • The absolute worse experience of my life. A total fraud. $70000.00 out the window for nothing! Do not even think about going to this school.

  • From the reviews, it looks like some folks couldn’t make it through the rigors of the Ph.D. program. I guess these folks would rather quit, and waste their money, than be dubbed a fake, fraud, phony nitwit. Send but the time you begin doctoral studies, you should be smart enough to have done extensive investigation into not only who had previously graduated from that particular program, but what their successes have been.

  • Their PHD is a complete fraud, no other way to explain it. Do not go here! A bad joke, better off burning your money.

  • This is not a school of any kind. It is an unmitigated joke. Anyone who
claims they graduated Union’s “PHD” program can only be dubbed a fake, fraud,
and phony nitwit. Wow, how is it that this place still operates. If you see
someone with a degree from Union Inst. run the other way!

  • I graduated from their “per-cohort” PhD program in 2000. I know there have been serious problems since then but my experience could not have been better. I designed my program to be fairly traditional–took regular classes at other universities, had professors from local universities on my committee, did a very structured and highly supervised internship, traditional dissertation, etc. I got a grant to pay for my dissertation research so I was lucky. Michael Quinn Patton was teaching there when I attended and his research methods seminar was incredible. I worked my butt off to earn that degree. I had friends in supposedly rigorous doctoral programs at traditional universities who didn’t put in half the time I did. Two months after I graduated, I got a faculty position at a Research 1 university, where I worked for 9 years before moving to a smaller university. I feel awful for the people who have had such bad experiences, especially those who were there in 2004 when the accreditation nightmare began. For me, it was a demanding but rewarding experience and my career took off after I graduated. Rating the quality it is difficult though because most of the professors and mentors I worked with were not affiliated with UIU.

  • I hear their PhD program had some issues and restructuring. But, I can’t say enough positive about their undergrad program. I think people complain because they are used to the University of Phoenix “pay for your degree” entitlement mentality. Union has good programs, and I worked my ass off there (worked me harder than the state college I attended prior). Recommend their undergrad programs wholeheartedly.

    Overall Score: (2.72/5.00)
  • This school is a complete rip off! Everything they have stated is correct in regards to the school.

    Overall Score: (1/5.00)
  • This school is a disaster. It will charm you, suck you in, and leave you with no degree, a worthless degree, and tons of debt. They don’t have enough faculty, they fire the faculty for financial reasons at the drop of a hat, and have lost their accreditation multiple times since 2002. If you are a victim of their fraud, join us on Facebook at Union Instiute and Univerity complaints or search for us at complaintboard.com. Don’t pay those loans! We already have a U.S. Congressional Representative on our side.
